JOB DESCRIPTION
Position:R&D Specialist
Shift:1st
Schedule: Monday-Friday
Reports To:R&D Manager
Employment Status: Full Time
FLSA Classification: Exempt - Salary
Compensation Range: $70,000 - $80,000 + Performance Bonus
Job Summary:
Cookies United, a growing manufacturer of baked goods based in Islip, NY, is looking to fulfill the Research and Development Specialist position.
The R&D Specialist will be involved in all new product development, reformulation of existing recipes, as well as the related implementation of the production process for new items. The production process includes mixing, depositing, baking and packaging. The R&D Specialist will be responsible for creating and maintaining technical specifications on new and existing products and ingredients.
Job Responsibilities:
Project Management
  • Work on project definitions and creation in conjunction with the R+D Manager.
  • Manage the project schedule sheet that includes dates, scope of the project, completion dates and expected results for each assigned project.
  • Participates in meetings to provide project updates on a weekly basis.

Product Development
  • Organize production testing for new recipes.
  • Source ingredients for recipes either in house or from a third-party vendor.
  • Prepare samples for sensorial evaluation until product is deemed approved or abandoned.

Training
  • Lead training for the production team on product specifications and handling.

Document Requirements
  • Responsible for maintenance of recipes in the Company's ERP system.
  • Responsible for keeping specification sheets on each active ingredient.
  • Obtain and maintain approvals of all new ingredients and finished goods.
  • Maintain and secure all tests records whether successful or not.

Job Requirements:
  • Creativity - ability to generate novel ideas and follow up through implementation.
  • An accomplished record for developing and fostering successful cross-organizational work relationships (production, purchasing, marketing and finance teams) to solve problems.
  • Advanced ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities. Ability to provide technical and programmatic direction.
  • The ability to clearly communicate the reasoning behind design/ execution choices.
  • Knowledge of SQF + food safety is a plus.

Education and Experience:
  • College Degree in Science/ Product development and/or a combination of education and work experience.
  • 2 - 4 years of hands-on product development experience (bench top to commercialization) in multiple baking product categories.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Ability to lift and carry ingredients to mix doughs and produce samples.
  • Walking: move about inside the office and different areas of the plant.
  • Product testing in hot or cold environments.
  • Sit/ Stand for extended periods of time.
