What is a Medical Coding Trainee job?

A Medical Coding Trainee is an entry-level role where individuals learn to assign standardized codes to medical diagnoses, procedures, and treatments based on healthcare documentation. Trainees typically receive on-the-job training in coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS to ensure accurate billing and insurance claims processing. This role is crucial for maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and maximizing reimbursements for medical services.

How to become a trainee clinical coder?

To become a medical coding trainee, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by completing a medical coding training program or certification course. Gaining knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD and CPT, and computer skills is essential; some employers may also require or prefer certification from organizations such as AAPC or AHIMA. On-the-job training often accompanies the role, providing practical experience in coding procedures and documentation.

Are medical coders still in demand?

Medical coders are currently in demand due to ongoing healthcare industry growth and the need for accurate medical billing and coding. The role requires knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and certifications such as CPC can enhance job prospects in hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies.

What does a typical day look like for a Medical Coding Trainee?

As a Medical Coding Trainee, your day will often involve reviewing patient records, assigning appropriate medical codes, and entering data into healthcare systems under the supervision of experienced coders. You may participate in regular training sessions and feedback meetings to refine your skills and stay updated on coding guidelines. Expect to collaborate with healthcare providers and billing staff to clarify documentation and resolve discrepancies. This supportive, learning-focused environment helps you gain practical experience and prepares you for advancement to more independent coding roles.

Can I get a medical coding job with no experience?

Medical coding trainee positions often do not require prior experience, as they focus on training and certification in coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT. Entry-level roles may be available for individuals who complete relevant training programs and obtain certification, such as the CPC credential, which can improve job prospects. Having strong attention to detail and familiarity with medical terminology can also help in securing a coding position without experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Medical Coding Trainee position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Coding Trainee, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, healthcare documentation, and at minimum a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and medical billing software is commonly required, and pursuing certifications such as CPC or CCS can be advantageous. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and strong organizational skills are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities are vital to ensure accurate coding, reduce billing errors, and support effective healthcare operations.

How to get training in medical coding?

Medical coding trainees can obtain training through accredited online or in-person courses offered by community colleges, vocational schools, or professional organizations. These programs typically cover coding systems like ICD, CPT, and HCPCS, and may include internships or certification preparation to enhance job readiness.

Job description

Henry Ford Health

Henry Ford Health (HFH) in Detroit, Michigan, is one of the nation's leading comprehensive health systems, recognized for excellence in clinical care, research, and education. The Center for Cutaneous Biology and Immunology (CCBI) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary research program dedicated to advancing our understanding of skin biology and immunology, cancer immunology, and the functional genomics that govern immune cell behavior in cancer as well as autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Our team fosters an innovative, collaborative, diverse, and open-minded research environment in partnership with Michigan State University. We are supported by multiple NIH-funded grants and active communities of immunologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, data scientists, physician scientists, and computational biologists. Our mission is to advance translational research that leads to meaningful improvements in clinical care.

Position Description

We invite applications for an Assistant Professor / Assistant Scientist with expertise in computational biology, statistical genetics, genomics, and AI-driven medicine. We seek a highly motivated individual who develops and applies state-of-the-art computational methods to complex, large-scale biological datasets. The successful candidate will contribute to high-impact translational research programs and lead independent research efforts, and will hold a joint faculty appointment (Assistant Scientist) with Michigan State University as part of the HFH-MSU Health Sciences partnership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply computational, statistical, and AI/ML approaches to analyze diverse biological datasets, including:

    • Bulk and single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics
    • ATAC-seq (bulk and single-cell), proteomics, CyTOF, and IMC
    • Histological and radiological imaging data
    • Clinical and epidemiological datasets
  • Lead independent research projects and contribute to collaborative team science initiatives.
  • Pursue external funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, foundations) to support research programs.
  • Mentor trainees and collaborate closely with investigators across HFH and Michigan State University.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or a related discipline.

  • Strong research track record in genetics, multi-omics integration, and/or AI applications to biological or clinical data, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

  • Demonstrated ability-or strong potential-to secure external research funding.

  • Proficiency in programming and analytical languages/platforms (e.g., R, Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Experience working in Unix/Linux environments, including shell scripting (Bash, awk, sed).

  • Familiarity with tools for genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic analysis, including next-generation sequencing pipelines (DNA-seq, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq).

  • Experience with single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, eQTL/pQTL analysis, and multimodal data integration.

  • Familiarity with imaging analytics (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, H&E, IMC, radiological imaging).

  • Experience in human subjects research, healthcare data, epidemiology, or biomedical applications.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues of diverse technical and scientific backgrounds.
