How much do medical coder internship jobs pay per hour?
What is a medical coder internship?
What are the qualifications to get a medical coder internship?
The primary qualifications for a medical coder internship are enrollment in or graduation from a medical coding program and the ability to acquire a relevant coding certificate. You do not always need a coding certificate for an internship, but they can help you stand out from other applicants. Most medical coders wait until fairly late in their education to seek this kind of internship, as unlike in some other fields, medical coding requires a strong foundation in medical terminology and existing codes, and most students haven't mastered this until close to graduation. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a medical coding internship requires attention to detail, communication skills, and organizational skills.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical coder intern, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced during a medical coder internship, and how can interns effectively overcome them?
What is the difference between Medical Coder Internship vs Medical Coder?
| Aspect | Medical Coder Internship | Medical Coder |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically students or recent graduates, may have basic certifications | Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or equivalent required |
| Work Environment | Training setting, supervised, often part-time or temporary | Full-time, independent or team-based in healthcare facilities |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Hospitals, clinics, training programs | Hospitals, physician offices, insurance companies |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Learning, entry-level experience | Professional work, career advancement |
In summary, a Medical Coder Internship is a training position for those starting in the field, focusing on gaining experience under supervision. A Medical Coder is a certified professional responsible for coding medical records independently, often with more experience and credentials.

PartnerCare is a leading provider of interventional pain management and musculoskeletal services headquartered in Tampa, FL. Across over 30 locations in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Tennessee, PartnerCare provides comprehensive care to its patients, offering minimally invasive alternatives to surgery that address the root causes of patients' pain and help them live their best lives possible.
ABOUT THE PRACTICE
MidSouth Pain Treatment Center is a leading interventional pain management provider in the MidSouth region with eight offices in Mississippi and Tennessee. Our focus is to identify and treat the root cause of your pain, so we are treating the problem and not just the symptoms to provide our patients with long term relief.
OUR COMMITMENT TO VALUES
At PartnerCare, we live our core values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (CARE). We seek leaders who model these values through high standards of patient care, operational ownership, respectful teamwork, and continuous improvement.
SUMMARY
The Physician, specializing in spine and musculoskeletal interventions, provides advanced pain management treatment to a variety of patients and assists them in restoring optimal physical function to improve their quality of life. The Physician provides patient-centered care with high patient satisfaction, ensuring the patient has the best possible experience and outcomes. This role works within a multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and support staff committed to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based pain management care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Care
- Provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary pain management care and may supervise Advanced Practice Providers.
- Evaluate patients for medical concerns including injury, disease, chronic pain, and disabling conditions through comprehensive physical examinations and medical histories.
- Determine and implement appropriate treatment plans providing relief from chronic pain using medications, nerve blocks, electrical stimulation, and other evidence-based therapies.
- Determine and order appropriate diagnostic radiology exams and laboratory studies.
- Perform interventional procedures primarily in an outpatient or Ambulatory Surgery Center setting.
- Monitor ongoing patient progress and modify treatment plans as clinically necessary.
- Counsel patients and families on medical processes, medication management, nutrition, and health promotion.
- Provide adaptive tools to improve the overall health and physical functioning of patients.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic health records detailing patient treatment plans and outcomes.
- Initiate timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice or expertise.
- Adhere to all HIPAA guidelines, regulatory standards, and PartnerCare compliance policies.
Collaboration & Growth
- Direct, support, and collaborate with Advanced Practice Providers in care delivery.
- Collaborate closely with clinical and administrative staff through in-person consultation, EMR documentation, and team communication.
- Actively participate in growing the practice through marketing, educational, and community engagement activities.
