Job description

Mayo Clinic Global Security Asst. Supervisors assists in overseeing the activities and supervision of Security Officers on an assigned shift by providing input, recommending appropriate action, and dissemination of information. They participate in the hiring and training of new Security Officers. They will provide input into staff appraisals and assist with timekeeping duties on occasion. They will perform routine security officer functions as needed in conjunction with Asst. Supervisor duties.
This role supports and instills Mayo Clinic's mission, vision, and values within the department. The Asst. Supervisor might be the point of contact in an emergency situation until Security Leadership is on site.
May utilize security vehicle on a regular or occasional basis; enforces Mayo policies and responds to complaints and service calls for wrongdoing, prepares incident reports/activity logs, and may work in the Security control centers.
An Asst. Supervisor adapts to unpredictable and stressful situations; manages altercations and emergency crises in an effective and professional manner; operates and communicates on a two-way radio; exhibits good judgment, maturity, initiative, tact and diplomacy when dealing with people in stressful situations. They will frequently be walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, pulling, climbing, reaching, and pushing, and occasionally running; is able to move quickly up and down stairwells, from the ground floor up to the top floor of each building without assistance; assists patients, volunteers, visitors, and staff with emergency evacuations, including evacuations in stairwells, to include handling emergency evacuation devices used to transport patients and others to safety; makes effective decisions as an emergency first responder, is confident in stressful situations, and works as a team member with other emergency responders, including law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel.


They are able to work nights and weekends for security and protection assignments and when required by emergency or special situations.

This position may be required to carry and deploy a taser.

Bachelor's degree with one year of security, healthcare, law enforcement or military experience. Associates degree with three years of security, healthcare, law enforcement or military experience. HS/GED with five years of security, healthcare, law enforcement or military experience.Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience in a healthcare setting preferred; experience in patrolling, incident report writing, defensive tactics, emergency response, lock/unlock procedures, door access, and CCTV camera operation; experience with Windows XP or newer as well as intermediate skills in Microsoft Office software applications; technical aptitude to work with Security Technology is preferred.


Previous security experience; able to work independently and in a team-environment; requires strong sense of customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, visitors and employees; requires strong written and verbal skills; strong problem solving skills are necessary.
Has the ability to read and communicate effectively in a pleasant, courteous, professional and friendly manner. Maintains a professional appearance at all times per organizational and department standards. Can restrain potentially violent individuals; demonstrated ability to remain calm and assume control of emergency situations.
Staff must participate in routine and ongoing training and development programs as required by the organization or department.


Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic Policy; must obtain Advanced Level Certification from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 12 months. Training certification in AVADE Workplace Violence Training, basic CPR and AED, required within 1 year; defensive tactics certification required within 1 year.
