Job description

Position Title: Medical Standards Provider SME

Location: AFPC - Joint Base San Antonio Randolph

GC Associates requires a Medical Standards Provider to support the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC), Physicians Career Management Branch (DP2NP), Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Randolph, Texas. The Medical Standards Provider provides Professional Administrative Services as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and performs the duties of a Medical Retention Standards Provider supporting the USAF Medical Evaluation Board (MEB), Review-in-Lieu-of (RILO) MEB, Medical Assignment Limitations Code (ALC-C), Medical Hold (Med Hold), and Elective Surgery.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Make recommendations on active-duty AF members' medical qualification for continued military service. Identify and utilize appropriate AFIs, DoD Instructions, Policy Letters, AF manning and deployment statistics, and additional prescribed guidance, integrated with clinical knowledge of disease processes. This includes providing professional consultation to AF medical professionals, commanders, AFPC assignments functional, and members of the Physical Evaluation Boards (PEBs) and Secretary of the Air Force (SAF) Personnel Council.
  • Evaluate medical information to recommend appropriate medical administrative disposition when medical condition interferes with assignment, deployment, temporary duty, separation, or retirement.
  • Interpret clinical notes and determine impact on member's ability to deploy, change station, or be retained in military service. The contractor will use electronic databases to obtain health information and generate recommended dispositions, including the application or removal of medical assignment limitation codes. Cases will have a disposition within (two) 2 days of receipt.
  • Gather and provide information necessary to the Chief of AFPC/DP2NP to respond to Congressional, Inspector General, Board for Correction of Military Records, general officer and other high-level inquiries regarding AFPC/DP2NP's areas of responsibility and submit responses to the COR for approval within two (2) duty days of assignment.
  • Provide professional support services to review and process RILO MEBs submitted to update a service member's ALC-C and shall apply applicable AFIs to recommend approval or disapproval of Medical Hold and Elective Surgery requests. These requests shall be processed to always maintain patient privacy. Additionally, the contractor shall provide support to provide medical review to HQ/AFPC on inter and intra service transfer applications for medical clearance against AF retention standards.
  • Resolve questions and delineate requirements for an MEB or RILO MEB, make recommendations on whether a member's assignment or deployment should be deferred or cancelled, or to return a member to duty when they are pending a retirement or separation.
  • Make recommendations and provide consultation to AFPC/DPFD, Informal Physical Evaluation Board and Formal Physical Evaluation Board, in order to determine medical disposition on cases in which the factors may deviate from established guidelines of fitness for duty.
  • Prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established standards of the Physicians Career Management Branch (AFPC/DP2NP) to include but not limited to: timeliness, legibility, accuracy, content and signature, ensure appropriate patient identifying information is used on all documentation that is to become part of a government record system, complete the workload data sheet at the end of each work day.

Qualifications:

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: At least five (5) years of experience in military medical practice

At least six (6) months of experience deploying to field conditions or working in deployment related positions (example: simulated deployment training, deployment planning teams, etc.)

At least five (5) years of experience with military medical standards patient assessments and MEB narratives; and

At least five (5) years of experience with active-duty military physical profiling. Preference will be given to individuals who have processed military deployment limitation waivers and have worked directly with the DoD Disability Evaluation System. Since AF assignment limitation duty standards vary with those of the other uniformed services, preference will be given to individuals with experience within the United States Air Force (USAF) system.

Licenses/Certifications: Must have and maintain a valid state or federal license or certificate to practice medicine as a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant.

Must be board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties, certified as a nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners/American Nurses Credentialing Center or certified by the NCCPA. Preference will be given to contract Subject Matter Experts who have board certification in an adult primary care specialization, such that the provider will have a broad knowledge base of treatment protocols, prognoses, risks, and outcomes for diagnoses in multiple areas of medicine.
