Job description

Nurse Abstractor

The Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Family Health and Wellness is seeking a Nurse Abstractor within the Reproductive and Women's Health section.

The goal of the abstractor position is to comprehensively gather pertinent information to accurately capture the events of a person’s life leading up to and including death.

Key duties include:

  • Receiving identified deaths for review
  • Promptly abstracting information
  • Establishing relationships with hospitals and facilities to obtain medical records
  • Reviewing records and completing MMRIA forms accurately
  • Drafting case narratives
  • Attending review committee meetings
  • Assisting with data entry of committee decision forms into MMRIA
  • Conducting informant interviews
  • Staying updated on best practices for case abstraction through monthly abstractor meetings and an annual MMRIA user meeting.
