As a Mechatronics Engineering Tech, based in Middlefield (CT), you'll be responsible for improving manufacturing performance through automation, robotics, machine connectivity, and digital manufacturing systems. This role serves as the bridge between production equipment, control systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and business analytics.
This hands-on position will lead equipment connectivity projects, support MES enhancements, deploy automation and robotics solutions, and improve the accuracy and reliability of production data across the factory. The role is a key contributor to Zygo's Smart Factory strategy and digital transformation initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manufacturing Data & System Integration
  • Ensure accuracy, reliability, and availability of real-time production data from machines, sensors, metrology equipment, and operator interfaces to support operational decision-making.
  • Connect manufacturing equipment to MES, machine monitoring, ERP, and analytics platforms.
  • Troubleshoot data collection, network, PLC, sensor, and communication issues that impact manufacturing visibility.
  • Improve machine-state accuracy, downtime coding, utilization tracking, and production reporting.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, data collection methods, and automated reporting tools.
  • Validate production data integrity and drive corrective actions when discrepancies are identified.
  • Manage Veeam Backup & Replication for data protection and disaster recovery.

MES Ownership & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead continuous improvement activities for manufacturing execution systems.
  • Support new MES functionality including work order management, digital work instructions, labor tracking, machine monitoring, SPC, and automated data collection.
  • Partner with operations, engineering, planning, IT, and quality teams to optimize manufacturing workflows.
  • Train users and develop standard work for digital manufacturing systems.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify manufacturing transactions and improve user adoption.

Automation & Robotics
  • Evaluate, implement, and support automation and robotics solutions that increase capacity and reduce labor-intensive activities.
  • Design and execute projects involving robotics, collaborative robots, machine tending, conveyors, sensors, and vision systems.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and optimize automation equipment and control systems.
  • Support integration of robotics and automated equipment into existing manufacturing processes.
  • Develop business cases and ROI analyses for automation investments.

Equipment & Controls Support
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and controls-related issues on manufacturing equipment.
  • Support PLC, HMI, industrial networking, and machine communication systems.
  • Improve equipment uptime through proactive monitoring, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and manufacturing engineering teams on equipment upgrades and modifications.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree in Mechatronics, Automation Technology, Robotics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting manufacturing equipment, automation systems, or industrial controls, troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives, and industrial communication networks.
  • Data driven, organized, conscientious and focused.
  • Ability to work independently but flexible/adaptable with shifting priorities.
  • Driven to achieve with a commitment to quality and a safety-first mindset.
  • Familiarity with MES, machine monitoring, or industrial data systems.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification preferred
