What is a mechanical project manager?

A mechanical project manager coordinates activities on a mechanical construction project. As a mechanical project manager, you monitor the status of a project to ensure that it stays on schedule. You also make sure that the project is in compliance with all safety, labor, and zoning regulations. You typically spend less time on a work site than a construction manager and handle administrative duties such as budgeting and managing agreements with subcontractors. You may need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, building science, or a related field, but an associate degree and ample experience are often enough. Certification from the American Institute of Constructors or Construction Management Association of America is desirable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Project Manager, you need a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, project management methodologies, and relevant industry experience, often supported by a bachelor's degree and PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD systems, and budgeting tools is typically required. Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills enable effective team coordination and client relations. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope and budget, and ensuring technical and safety standards are met.

What are some common challenges mechanical project managers face when coordinating multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Mechanical Project Managers often encounter challenges when collaborating with electrical, civil, and architectural teams, especially on complex projects with tight deadlines. Effective communication and proactive conflict resolution are key, as misalignment between disciplines can lead to delays or budget overruns. Staying organized, understanding each team's workflow, and facilitating regular coordination meetings help ensure everyone is aligned and project milestones are met. Building strong relationships across teams can also foster a collaborative environment and smooth out potential friction points.

Job description

Bird Nason Contracting Group's teamwork approach combines the efforts of our professional engineers, technical staff and skilled trades people to deliver challenging projects through safe operations and specialized services. Bird Nason Contracting Group rewards innovation and creativity and promotes a healthy balance between professional and personal life.

We provide a wide variety of training including job specific safety and leadership training for apprentices and journeypersons. We value trade experience and support opportunities to advance into other positions in the firm including estimating, project management, site management or safety. We offer competitive wages, proper tools and a comprehensive benefits plan provided through The Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC).

We are always searching for dynamic and dedicated individuals to join our ever-growing Bird Nason Contracting Group team. Please take a look at our current opportunities.

We are currently seeking a Project Manager with a solid background in heavy civil and hydroelectric projects to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading all aspects of project execution from pre-construction through to project closeout while ensuring alignment with budget, schedule, safety, and quality expectations. This role is ideal for a results-driven professional who is ready and willing to mobilize to remote job sites and take ownership of complex infrastructure projects in the hydro sector.

What You Will Be Working On:

Client & Stakeholder Coordination:
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, engineering consultants, suppliers, and key project stakeholders. Represent the company professionally, promote its services within the hydro sector, and contribute to identifying and pursuing new project opportunities.

Project Planning & Execution:
Lead the planning and execution phases of hydroelectric projects, including dams, penstocks, and powerhouses. Ensure that project objectives related to cost, schedule, safety, and quality are met or exceeded. Foster a collaborative site environment that supports both performance and safety excellence.

Proposals & Contract Management:
Collaborate with senior management to prepare quotations, bids, and project proposals. Administer and negotiate contracts, manage tendering processes for subcontractors and suppliers, and ensure all documentation is approved internally before submission.

Project Setup & Coordination:
Set up new projects in relevant management systems. Coordinate scheduling and logistics for personnel, equipment, and materials, ensuring timely and efficient mobilization, particularly for remote hydro project locations.

Quality & Safety Standards:
Enforce the company's safety program and ensure compliance with all applicable standards, codes, and environmental regulations. Identify areas for improvement and ensure teams are trained and equipped to deliver high-quality, safe work in challenging hydro site environments.

Documentation & Reporting:
Prepare and manage all project documentation including shop drawing approvals, cost forecasts, billings, change orders, and progress reports. Ensure timely and thorough project closeouts.

Leadership & Team Motivation:
Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to cross-functional project teams. Lead by example, maintain a positive and goal-oriented attitude, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in heavy civil or hydroelectric construction project management.

  • Degree or diploma in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or Construction Management.

  • P.Eng. or EIT designation is considered an asset.

  • Strong understanding of hydroelectric infrastructure (dams, spillways, penstocks, turbine/generator stations).

  • Proven track record in project execution, contract management, and stakeholder coordination.

  • Excellent knowledge of safety, environmental, and quality standards in hydro construction.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, Viewpoint, Bluebeam, or similar tools.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

  • Ability and willingness to mobilize to remote or semi-remote project
