What are some common challenges a mechanical integration engineer faces when coordinating with cross-functional teams during a project?

Mechanical Integration Engineers often work closely with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. One common challenge is aligning differing timelines, priorities, and technical requirements between teams, which can lead to integration delays or design conflicts. Strong communication and project management skills are crucial to proactively identify potential issues and facilitate effective collaboration. Being adaptable and solution-oriented helps in navigating these complexities to deliver a successful integrated product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, systems integration, and typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring that complex mechanical systems are seamlessly integrated and function reliably within larger projects.

What is the difference between Mechanical Integration Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Integration EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating mechanical components into systems, ensuring compatibility and functionalityCreating and developing mechanical components and assemblies from concepts
Skills & CertificationsCAD, system integration, testing, often requires engineering degreeCAD, design software, prototyping, often requires engineering degree
Work EnvironmentSystems integration labs, manufacturing facilities, cross-disciplinary teamsDesign studios, R&D labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageAerospace, automotive, robotics, where system integration is keyProduct development, consumer electronics, machinery design

While both roles require engineering backgrounds and CAD skills, Mechanical Integration Engineers focus on combining mechanical components into complete systems, ensuring they work seamlessly. Mechanical Design Engineers primarily develop individual components and assemblies. Both roles are essential in product development but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Job description

Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc., (SGA), is searching for a Mechanical Engineer for an opportunity with one of our premier clients in Oshkosh, WI.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and supporting functional, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical systems and components for heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment.
This role will focus on geartrain, vehicle suspension, steering, and braking systems, with responsibility for engineering analysis, component selection, system integration, design documentation, troubleshooting, and production support.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing mechanical systems for mobile equipment, heavy-duty vehicles, automotive applications, or similar complex mechanical products and can independently execute engineering assignments while collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and other business functions.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Systems Design & Engineering
  • Design, develop, and improve mechanical systems and components for heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Apply engineering principles to geartrain, suspension, steering, and braking systems.
  • Perform engineering analysis to support component selection, system performance, reliability, safety, and cost objectives.
  • Evaluate existing designs and develop modifications or re-designs to improve performance, manufacturability, reliability, or cost.
  • Integrate mechanical components and systems into existing and new vehicle platforms.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical system and component issues and develop effective technical solutions.
  • Analyze and resolve engineering issues identified through production, testing, field performance, or internal/external customer feedback.
Engineering Design & Documentation
  • Develop and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, layouts, and engineering drawings using Creo, CATIA, or an equivalent high-level CAD system.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, layouts, and Bills of Material (BOMs).
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable engineering standards, drawing standards, safety requirements, and company processes.
  • Support engineering change processes, including design changes, documentation updates, and implementation of product improvements.
  • Prepare technical reports, proposals, quotations, presentations, and other engineering documentation as required.
Independent Technical Execution
  • Manage multiple engineering assignments and priorities while meeting established schedules and business requirements.
  • Work independently to investigate technical issues, develop solutions, and communicate recommendations with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provide timely engineering support to production and business continuity activities.
  • Support testing, validation, troubleshooting, and implementation of mechanical designs.
  • Exercise sound engineering judgment while working within established engineering standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Escalate complex technical issues appropriately and seek guidance when required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, suppliers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work with suppliers and internal customers to resolve design, component, quality, and technical issues.
  • Support senior engineers and engineering leadership on more complex projects and technical initiatives.
  • Share technical knowledge and contribute to continuous improvement within the engineering organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems or components for mobile equipment, heavy-duty vehicles, automotive applications, or similar mechanical products.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Geartrain systems
    • Vehicle suspension
    • Steering systems
    • Brake systems
    • Mechanical power transmission
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Creo, CATIA, or an equivalent system.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform engineering analysis and solve mechanical design problems.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively with limited supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • Experience with heavy-duty trucks, vocational vehicles, off-highway equipment, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or other mobile machinery.
  • Advanced experience with Creo or CATIA.
  • Experience with engineering change processes and configuration management.
  • Experience supporting production, manufacturing, testing, or field issues.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers on mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of vehicle-level mechanical system integration.
