As of Jul 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineering technology in the United States is $102,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,500.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs can I get with mechanical technology?

Mechanical Engineering Technology graduates can pursue roles such as mechanical technician, manufacturing technologist, quality control inspector, CAD technician, or maintenance supervisor. These positions often require knowledge of engineering principles, proficiency with tools like CAD software, and sometimes industry certifications or hands-on experience in manufacturing or design environments.

What is Mechanical Engineering Technology?

Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) is a field focused on applying engineering principles and technical skills to design, develop, test, and manufacture mechanical devices and systems. Professionals in MET often work with tools, machines, and production processes to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering and practical application. They typically work alongside engineers to implement solutions, improve manufacturing processes, and ensure product quality. MET graduates are employed in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, where their hands-on expertise is highly valued.

Can you make $200,000 a year as a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers can earn $200,000 or more annually with extensive experience, advanced skills, and work in high-paying industries such as aerospace or oil and gas. Achieving this salary often requires senior roles, management positions, or specialized expertise, along with a strong educational background and professional certifications. Entry-level salaries are typically lower, and reaching this level may take several years of career development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, applied mathematics, and mechanical systems, typically supported by an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), experience with manufacturing processes, and familiarity with industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the accurate design, analysis, and implementation of mechanical solutions that meet industry needs and safety standards.

What does a mechanical engineering tech do?

A mechanical engineering technician assists engineers in designing, testing, and manufacturing mechanical devices and systems. They often use tools like CAD software, perform technical calculations, and prepare documentation to support engineering projects. Their work typically involves hands-on testing, troubleshooting, and ensuring that designs meet specifications and safety standards.

What are mechanical engineering technology jobs?

Mechanical engineering technology jobs involve applying engineering principles to design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems. These roles often require skills in CAD software, problem-solving, and understanding of manufacturing processes, with common positions including mechanical technician, design engineer, and manufacturing engineer.

What are some common challenges Mechanical Engineering Technologists face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Mechanical Engineering Technologists often collaborate with professionals from electrical, software, and manufacturing backgrounds. A frequent challenge is ensuring effective communication across disciplines, as each field may use different technical terminology and design approaches. Successfully navigating these differences requires adaptability, strong teamwork skills, and a willingness to learn about adjacent fields. Overcoming these challenges leads to more efficient project development and improved end products.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineering Technology vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Engineering TechnologyMechanical Design Engineer
EducationAssociate's or Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering TechnologyBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
CertificationsOptional certifications like Certified Engineering Technician (CET)Professional Engineer (PE) license often required
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, testing labs, technical supportDesign offices, R&D, product development
Job FocusApplying engineering principles to support manufacturing and testingCreating and analyzing mechanical designs and prototypes

Mechanical Engineering Technicians primarily support manufacturing and testing processes, focusing on applying engineering principles practically. Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on designing and developing mechanical systems and products. While both roles require a strong understanding of mechanical concepts, their work environments and responsibilities differ significantly.
