Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer V provides leadership, technical expertise, and strategic guidance in the design of HVAC and mechanical utility systems for complex building projects. This role supports all phases of design and delivery for projects of varying size and complexity, with a strong emphasis on technical excellence, multidisciplinary coordination, and mentorship of engineering staff.
The Mechanical Engineer V demonstrates the ability to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously, collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders, establish priorities, and direct the work of others. Typical responsibilities include technical planning, system design, documentation, field support, and quality oversight across the full project lifecycle.
Project scope may include site selection and utility assessments, master planning, energy modeling, load calculations, commissioning and startup, code evaluations, system selection and specification, and coordination with manufacturers and trade partners. This role supports all levels of design, including feasibility studies, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
Core Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the execution of mechanical design and engineering work on advanced and complex projects
  • Direct, coordinate, and mentor mechanical engineers and designers across multiple experience levels
  • Collaborate with Project Managers on proposal development, scope definition, labor planning, scheduling, and resource forecasting
  • Perform and oversee advanced mechanical system design, analysis, and documentation with minimal or no supervision
  • Identify, assess, and resolve complex existing-condition challenges through site visits and field surveys
  • Produce and review design narratives, reports, construction drawings, and technical specifications
  • Provide advanced construction-phase support, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development, and progress reporting
  • Perform detailed quality reviews of calculations, drawings, and documentation to ensure technical accuracy and compliance
  • Develop and deliver internal technical training and knowledge-sharing initiatives
  • Conduct technical and leadership interviews and support talent development initiatives
  • Provide technical leadership across offices and support initiatives related to business development, technical advancement, and vertical market growth
  • Contribute industry insight to help inform strategic decisions related to emerging technology, codes, and client needs

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (mechanical focus)
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing
  • Expert-level experience designing HVAC, mechanical utilities, and piping systems
  • Advanced proficiency with applicable mechanical, plumbing, fire, and building codes
  • Advanced knowledge of industry standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, ISPE, FDA, ISO, NFPA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Extensive experience conducting and leading field investigations and reporting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with Revit
  • Experience in Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Laboratory, or Food & Beverage facilities
  • Advanced knowledge of cGMP requirements and regulated environments
  • LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design credentials, or equivalent experience
  • Strong experience coordinating across disciplines, trade partners, vendors, and manufacturers
  • Advanced troubleshooting experience with complex mechanical systems
