How much do mechanical engineer fabrication jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineer fabrication in the United States is $102,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,500.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Fabrication vs Mechanical Engineer Design?

AspectMechanical Engineer FabricationMechanical Engineer Design
Primary FocusManufacturing processes, fabrication techniques, and assembly of mechanical componentsCreating, analyzing, and optimizing mechanical designs and systems
Work EnvironmentFactories, workshops, manufacturing plantsDesign offices, engineering labs, CAD environments
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, fabrication certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, CAD/software proficiency

Mechanical Engineer Fabrication focuses on the manufacturing and assembly of mechanical parts, working closely with production teams. Mechanical Engineer Design emphasizes creating and analyzing mechanical systems and components using design tools. Both roles require a mechanical engineering degree, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

What does a mechanical engineer fabrication do?

A Mechanical Engineer in Fabrication is responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes of mechanical components and systems. They work closely with production teams to ensure products are made efficiently, cost-effectively, and meet quality standards. Their duties often include creating technical drawings, selecting materials, troubleshooting manufacturing issues, and implementing improvements in fabrication processes. Mechanical Engineers in this field play a key role in turning design concepts into tangible, functional products.

What are some typical challenges mechanical engineer fabrication professionals face when transitioning designs from CAD models to actual manufactured components?

One common challenge is ensuring that the design specifications in CAD models can be translated effectively into manufacturable parts, taking into account material limitations and fabrication processes such as welding, machining, or forming. Mechanical Engineer Fabrication professionals must also address potential discrepancies between theoretical designs and real-world tolerances, which can require close collaboration with production teams. Additionally, they often need to troubleshoot issues that arise during prototyping and adjust designs to optimize for cost, manufacturability, and performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical engineer fabrication?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Fabrication, you need a solid understanding of mechanical design principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), CNC machinery, and relevant industry certifications like ASME are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure that fabricated products meet specifications, maintain high quality, and are produced efficiently in a collaborative environment.
