Mechanical Engineers Co focus on designing, analyzing, and testing mechanical systems, often requiring engineering credentials. Mechanical Designers primarily create detailed CAD models and drawings, typically with design-focused education. Both roles work in manufacturing and design environments but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Mechanical Engineer Co. expect to handle during their typical workweek?

As a Mechanical Engineer Co., you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include product design, prototyping, conducting simulations, and supporting testing processes. Your responsibilities often involve collaborating with senior engineers, drafting technical drawings, and participating in team meetings to solve engineering challenges. The role provides a mix of hands-on tasks and computer-aided design work, offering valuable exposure to different phases of the engineering development cycle. This experience not only enhances your technical skills but also helps you build strong teamwork and communication abilities, which are essential for career progression.

What does a Mechanical Engineer Co-op do?

A Mechanical Engineer Co-op, or Cooperative Education student, works alongside professional engineers to gain practical experience while still in school. They assist in designing, testing, and improving mechanical systems, and may also help with drafting, research, and troubleshooting. This role provides hands-on exposure to real-world engineering challenges, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to industry projects and develop valuable technical and teamwork skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Job description

Description
Test Engineer Stewartville, MN | Full-Time | On-Site
About the Role
GEOTEK engineers and manufactures high-performance pultruded composite structural products used in electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure across North America and globally. We've been doing this for over 30 years and are continuing to grow.
We're looking for a Test Engineer to join a small, capable engineering team. This role is a genuine mix of lab work and desk work - you'll be running and setting up tests, designing fixtures in SolidWorks, analyzing data, writing reports, and supporting new product development. One day you might be operating hydraulic test equipment on the floor; the next you're doing tolerance stack-up analysis or writing a test procedure.
The person who does well here is naturally curious, comfortable figuring things out independently, and gets energy from a role that doesn't look the same everyday.
What You'll Do
  • Design test fixtures using SolidWorks (3D models, drawings, GD&T per ANSI Y14.5)
  • Set up and execute tests - instrumentation, data acquisition, fixturing, physical handling of test articles
  • Analyze test data (including statistical analysis) and draw meaningful conclusions
  • Write test plans, procedures, and reports
  • Perform structural analysis and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Support new product development: quote packages, prototype procurement, production support
  • Maintain and calibrate lab equipment
  • Provide technical input to Operations, Manufacturing, and customers

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Composites, Civil, or Materials Engineering - minimum 3.5 GPA
  • SolidWorks proficiency (3D modeling, assemblies, GD&T drawings)
  • Coursework or applied experience in statics, machine design, or structural analysis
  • Hands-on comfort - you're fine using manual tools, power tools, and working around equipment like overhead cranes and hydraulic systems (we'll train the specifics)
  • Self-directed; you can take a task with minimal guidance and run with it
  • Internship, co-op, or meaningful project experience is preferred - a strong senior design project with real depth counts
  • FEA experience is a plus, not a requirement

Physical Work Conditions
Time should be split between test labs and the office or meeting rooms ranging anywhere from 25% to 75% in engineering labs. While working in the labs there will be work with and around moving machinery, fumes and chemicals. Office work requires sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone.
The compensation range for this position is $66,265 - $94,427. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions
Who We Are
For over 30 years, GEOTEK has been internationally recognized for industry leading composite technologies, engineering, and service. The company has grown PUPIยฎ into the leading global provider of fiberglass crossarms and is committed to adding and developing other market-leading composite brands for the world's infrastructure. The company was founded in 1990 to manufacture and market Common Sense Fencing and other pultruded fiberglass products. Early on GEOTEK also began producing utility composite crossarms for Pultruded Utility Products, Inc., a company it acquired in 2000 and renamed Pultruded Utility Products International (PUPI) to reflect the global opportunity for these products. PUPI (pronounced "puppy") is a brand of GEOTEK. Using proprietary processes and several patented inventions, GEOTEK manufactures and distributes engineered fiberglass composites that are used by the transmission and distribution power lines and substations. The company is well positioned for sustained growth and profitability through market expansion and new product offerings.
Our Purpose
As the global leader in composite crossarms, we aim to broaden our engineered composite products in infrastructure applications with light poles and beyond.
Mission
Enhance the world's infrastructure with engineered composite products.
Vision
Develop, acquire, and grow respected composite product brands; where each product line delivers market-leading reliability, performance, and value to global infrastructure customers.
