What does a mechanical drafter do?

A mechanical drafter creates detailed technical drawings and plans for mechanical systems and components using CAD software. They interpret engineering specifications, prepare blueprints for manufacturing or construction, and ensure designs meet industry standards and project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mechanical Drafting position, and why are they important?

To excel in Mechanical Drafting, a solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, strong attention to detail, and proficiency in technical drawing are essential, often supported by an associate degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor is typically required, and certification through programs like Autodesk or the American Design Drafting Association can be beneficial. Strong teamwork, clear communication, and time management help drafters collaborate effectively with engineers and meet project deadlines. These skills ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant designs that facilitate smooth project development and manufacturing processes.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone in a Mechanical Drafting role?

Mechanical Drafters spend their days creating detailed technical drawings and plans that engineers use to design machinery, equipment, or structures. Their work may also involve revising existing designs based on feedback, preparing documentation for production, and supporting engineering teams in translating concepts into manufacturable blueprints. They frequently collaborate with engineers, architects, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet quality and industry standards. In addition, Mechanical Drafters may participate in project meetings, problem-solve design challenges, and keep their drawing files up-to-date using the latest CAD software.

What is a Mechanical Drafting job?

A Mechanical Drafting job involves creating detailed technical drawings and blueprints for mechanical components, machines, and systems. Drafters use computer-aided design (CAD) software to convert engineers' and designers' concepts into precise schematics used for manufacturing and assembly. They must ensure that designs comply with industry standards and specifications. Mechanical drafters often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and other professionals to refine designs and resolve technical issues. Attention to detail and a strong understanding of engineering principles are essential for success in this role.

Job description

***This job has preference to qualified local job seekers within 60 miles of Axis Gainesville, TX facility.

The Axis Mechanical Drafter translates engineering concepts, sketches, and design requirements into detailed technical drawings, 3D models, and manufacturing documentation. This role uses SolidWorks and PDM software to define dimensions, tolerances, materials, and assembly requirements for mechanical components, assemblies, and equipment. The Mechanical Drafter partners with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with applicable drafting standards and internal document-control procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Create accurate 3D models, detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, and manufacturing blueprints using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor.
  • Interpret engineering notes, sketches, specifications, and calculations to develop complete drawing packages for fabrication and assembly.
  • Define dimensions, geometric tolerances, materials, finishes, fastening methods, and other technical requirements in accordance with company and industry standards.
  • Produce flat patterns, CNC cut files, and nest-ready layouts for sheet metal and fabricated components, as applicable.
  • Create, update, and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), revision histories, and related engineering documentation.
  • Manage drawing files, models, and released documents within the PDM system, ensuring proper version control, naming conventions, and archival practices.
  • Incorporate engineering change orders/notices (ECOs/ECNs) and update existing drawings to reflect design, production, or quality-related changes.
  • Review drawings for completeness, accuracy, fit, function, and manufacturability prior to release.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, fabricators, quality personnel, and management to resolve design issues and improve product manufacturability and cost effectiveness.
  • Support prototype builds, first articles, and production troubleshooting by clarifying drawing intent and revising documents as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable drafting standards, safety expectations, and internal procedures while meeting project deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field; equivalent technical training and directly relevant experience may be considered.
  • 2+ years of mechanical drafting or design support experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or product development environment preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks; experience with AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar CAD tools is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of PDM systems, revision control, and engineering document-release processes.
  • Understanding of drafting standards and dimensioning practices, including GD&T and ASME Y14.5.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, welding, assembly, and 3D printing.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs and identify potential design or manufacturability issues.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work with measurements, tolerances, and scale.
  • High attention to detail, strong spatial visualization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, production, and quality teams.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with sheet metal design, weldments, CNC manufacturing support, or design-for-manufacturing practices is preferred. SolidWorks certification (such as CSWA or CSWP), experience creating inspection drawings, and familiarity with ERP systems or quality documentation are also a plus.
