Department: Scene Shop | Reports to: Technical Director & Production Technical Director
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt (40 hours/week)
Expected Start Date: 6/22/2026
Pay Rate: $29 hourlyLocation: Ashland / Talent, OR (with occasional remote flexibility)
The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is seeking a collaborative and technically skilled Assistant Technical Director to support scenic design, construction, and production operations across our repertory season. This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in scenic construction and drafting who is eager to grow their skills while contributing to complex, large-scale productions.
The Role You'll Play
As Assistant Technical Director, you'll work closely with the Technical Director team to support the planning, drafting, budgeting, and execution of scenic elements. You'll help translate artistic designs into buildable plans, coordinate technical details across productions, and support load-ins, rigging logistics, and technical rehearsals. This role is both hands-on and collaborative, with opportunities to expand your technical expertise in a dynamic production environment.
What You'll Do
  • Technical Drafting & Design: Assist in creating technical drawings and construction plans for scenic elements.
  • Budgeting & Research: Support estimating processes, product research, and R&D for scenic builds.
  • CNC & Fabrication Support: Prepare CNC files and assist in workflow planning for scenic production.
  • Rigging & Load-In Planning: Help design and execute rigging solutions and develop load-in and changeover plans.
  • Production Coordination: Distribute drawings, communicate design updates, and support shop floor operations.
  • Technical Rehearsals: Represent the Scene Shop during technical rehearsals as needed.
  • Logistics & Operations: Assist with transporting scenery and materials, maintaining documentation, and organizing shop systems.
You'll Thrive Here If You...
  • Have at least 3 years of experience in a professional scenic or technical theatre shop.
  • Bring working knowledge of scenic construction, carpentry, welding, and theatrical rigging.
  • Have experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting software (Vectorworks, SolidWorks, or Inventor a plus).
  • Are highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Are motivated to learn, take initiative, and grow your technical skillset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a repertory theatre environment.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling tools.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate shop equipment such as forklifts or lifts (training provided).
Physical & Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physical tasks including kneeling, crouching, and lifting.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods or work at a computer for long durations.
  • Standard schedule is Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends for load-ins, load-outs, and technical rehearsals.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) was founded in 1935 in Ashland, OR, and has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a nationally renowned theatre arts organization that presents a rotating repertory season of up to 10 plays and musicals, including illuminating interpretations of Shakespeare, other enduring classics, and new works.
