Will CAD drafters be replaced by AI?

CAD drafters are unlikely to be fully replaced by AI in the near future, as their role involves complex interpretation, customization, and understanding of project requirements. AI tools can assist with automating repetitive tasks and improving efficiency, but human oversight and expertise remain essential for accurate technical drafting and design validation.

What are the typical responsibilities of an Assistant Technical Drafting professional on a daily basis?

As an Assistant Technical Drafting professional, your daily tasks will often include preparing and revising technical drawings and blueprints under the guidance of senior drafters or engineers. You may use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed schematics, ensure drawings meet project specifications, and maintain organized records of all drafts. Collaboration is common—you'll frequently communicate with engineers, architects, and other team members to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies. This role provides a great opportunity to develop technical skills and gain exposure to larger projects within a supportive team environment.

What is the difference between Assistant Technical Drafting vs Drafting Technician?

Assistant Technical Drafting roles typically involve supporting senior drafters by preparing basic sketches and assisting with technical drawings. Drafting Technicians usually handle more detailed and precise drawings independently, often requiring more advanced certifications. Both roles are essential in design and engineering industries, but Drafting Technicians generally have greater responsibilities and technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Technical Drafting professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Technical Drafting professional, you need a solid understanding of technical drawing principles, attention to detail, and typically an associate degree or certification in drafting or a related field. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks is standard, along with knowledge of industry-specific standards. Strong communication, time management, and teamwork skills help you effectively interpret instructions and collaborate with engineers or architects. These skills and qualities ensure precise, efficient production of technical drawings crucial for successful project execution.

What does an assistant draftsman do?

An assistant draftsman supports senior drafters and engineers by preparing technical drawings, sketches, and plans using CAD software. They assist in creating detailed diagrams, ensuring accuracy, and may review drawings for errors, often working under supervision in an engineering or architectural environment.

Is technical drafting in high demand?

Technical drafting is in steady demand across industries such as manufacturing, construction, and engineering, especially as infrastructure projects and product development grow. Proficiency in CAD software and industry standards can enhance job prospects, with opportunities often available for both entry-level and experienced drafters.

What is an Assistant Technical Drafting job?

An Assistant Technical Drafting job involves supporting engineers, architects, or designers by creating and revising technical drawings and blueprints. These professionals use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce detailed plans for buildings, machinery, or other structures. Their responsibilities may also include maintaining drawing files, assisting with project documentation, and ensuring that designs comply with relevant standards. Assistant Technical Drafters play a key role in the design process by helping to turn ideas and concepts into precise technical documents.

How much are CAD technicians paid?

CAD technicians typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $40,000 to $60,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced technicians with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages. Salaries can also vary based on the complexity of projects and the use of advanced CAD software tools.

Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Drafter / Design Coordinator to join our team at Harry Braswell Design + Build. You will be the technical engine behind our design process, taking conceptual ideas and on-site measurements and turning them into precise, actionable drawings. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys the "nitty-gritty" of construction documentation and wants to see their drawings come to life in high-end, historic, and custom residential projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • On-Site Measuring: Visit project sites (often older or historic homes) to accurately measure existing conditions.
  • Technical Drafting: Use AutoCAD to produce detailed floor plans, electrical plans, interior/exterior elevations, and cabinetry drawings.
  • Detailed Documentation: Produce precise drawings that builders and subcontractors can use for seamless implementation without ambiguity.
  • Design Support: Assist the Senior Design/PM team (Gretchen and Marta) by translating their creative vision into technical sets.
  • Presentation & Organization: Utilize digital tools to assemble design presentations and client materials to keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Project Evolution: Maintain and update drawings as project scopes shift during the renovation process.

Technical Skills & Qualifications

  • Software Proficiency (Required): Strong command of AutoCAD is a primary must-have. You must be able to create comprehensive plan sets (elevations, floor plans, electrical).
  • Administrative & Presentation Tools: Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace, and creative tools like Canva or Photoshop to assist in project organization and client presentations.
  • Construction Knowledge: Ability to understand residential construction sequencing and how interior details (trim, cabinetry, tile) integrate.
  • Experience with cabinetry design is a strong bonus.
  • Education: A degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a technical drafting certificate. (A two-year degree is welcomed if technical skill is high).
  • Historical Sensibility: An appreciation for older homes and the unique challenges they present during measurement and drafting.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Precision-Focused: You find satisfaction in the "nitty-gritty" details and take pride in the accuracy of your measurements.
  • Self-Starter: You are proactive and don't require constant "hand-holding" once a project's direction is established.
  • Local Insight: Local or regional educational/work background providing a baseline for North American residential standards.
  • Communication: Comfortable and professional when communicating with internal teams, vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors via email, phone, and in person. You are also comfortable interacting with clients during site visits.

Compensation & Growth

  • Salary: Starting range of $60,000 - $65,000 (commensurate with experience).
  • Growth Path: This role is essential as our firm grows. There is a significant opportunity to take on more responsibility as you learn the specific "Design + Build" brand and standards.

Why This Role?

Unlike a traditional architecture firm where you might be one of a dozen CAD operators, here you are integral to the project's success. You will work on unique, high-end renovations where every drawing matters, and you will see your work built in real-time.
