Mathematical Modeling Intern information

What does a Mathematical Modeling Intern do?

A Mathematical Modeling Intern assists in developing and implementing mathematical models to solve real-world problems in fields such as engineering, finance, or science. They work with data, analyze trends, and use software tools to simulate scenarios and support decision-making. Interns often collaborate with teams to interpret results and refine models, gaining hands-on experience with quantitative analysis and computational methods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mathematical Modeling Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mathematical Modeling Intern, you need strong skills in mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, typically supported by coursework in applied mathematics, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience with simulation or modeling software are commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are important soft skills for translating complex data into actionable insights and collaborating with diverse teams. These competencies are vital for developing accurate models, interpreting results, and contributing effectively to research or business objectives.

What are some typical projects or tasks that a Mathematical Modeling Intern might work on during their internship?

As a Mathematical Modeling Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that involve building and analyzing mathematical models to solve business or research challenges. Typical tasks may include collecting and cleaning data, developing algorithms, running simulations, and interpreting results to support decision-making. Often, interns collaborate closely with data scientists, researchers, or engineers, and may be asked to present their findings to both technical and non-technical teams. This hands-on experience not only enhances your technical skills but also provides valuable exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork in a professional setting.

ENERGY SYSTEMS GROUP is looking for a Lighting Intern to join our team. The Lighting Intern will perform or assist in typical responsibilities assigned to Lighting Application Specialists. The intern will work closely with an assigned mentor and report directly to the Lighting Manager assigned to them, and will become familiar with other duties associated with project development and implementation.
The essential functions of the position include:
The Lighting Intern will become most ESG Lighting responsibilities and will be assigned tasks to perform or assist in analyses and development of lighting projects. Lighting Intern will also participate in construction management, where opportunities arise. The following breakdown of duties is intended to be an approximation of time spent over a typical work week:
  • 50% Lighting Audit Support - assist senior engineers with on-site facility walkthroughs to inventory existing lighting systems and document field conditions. This hands-on role provides exposure to investment-grade auditing by capturing the raw data-such as fixture counts, wattages, and control types-needed to model energy-saving LED retrofits.
  • 35% Lighting Construction Support - provide on-site support during the construction phase to ensure lighting installations align with design specifications and safety standards. This role involves tracking material deliveries, performing post-installation inspections, and helping the project team resolve real-time field challenges.
  • 10% Special projects - TBD, such as developing a revised audit analysis spreadsheet template or a calculator. The specific task will be determined after further discussion between the intern and mentor.
  • 5% Administrative tasks - such as time sheets, team meetings, etc.

Your background includes:
  • Going into junior or senior level standing at an accredited institution studying some form of engineering, business, law, finance, math, or related field.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • Good work ethic.
  • Communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • At least 10 consecutive weeks of uninterrupted availability to work 40 hours a week.
  • Substantial interest in one of ESG's fields - sustainability, lighting systems, utility expense reduction, renewables (solar, landfill gas, etc.)

We want you to know:
