Mathematical Modeling Intern information

What does a Mathematical Modeling Intern do?

A Mathematical Modeling Intern assists in developing and implementing mathematical models to solve real-world problems in fields such as engineering, finance, or science. They work with data, analyze trends, and use software tools to simulate scenarios and support decision-making. Interns often collaborate with teams to interpret results and refine models, gaining hands-on experience with quantitative analysis and computational methods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mathematical Modeling Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mathematical Modeling Intern, you need strong skills in mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, typically supported by coursework in applied mathematics, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience with simulation or modeling software are commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are important soft skills for translating complex data into actionable insights and collaborating with diverse teams. These competencies are vital for developing accurate models, interpreting results, and contributing effectively to research or business objectives.

What are some typical projects or tasks that a Mathematical Modeling Intern might work on during their internship?

As a Mathematical Modeling Intern, you can expect to work on real-world projects that involve building and analyzing mathematical models to solve business or research challenges. Typical tasks may include collecting and cleaning data, developing algorithms, running simulations, and interpreting results to support decision-making. Often, interns collaborate closely with data scientists, researchers, or engineers, and may be asked to present their findings to both technical and non-technical teams. This hands-on experience not only enhances your technical skills but also provides valuable exposure to interdisciplinary teamwork in a professional setting.

Job description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is looking for a motivated 2026 Summer Engineering Intern with aerospace product development interests to join our Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System (IFPCS) team. The Intern will report to the IFPCS Analysis Team Lead, and their principal activity will be simulation test cases for IFPCS CDR and for the IFPCS Performance report.

Important traits of Joby's community are, positive attitude, diligent work ethic, ability to manage assignment with coaching, and learning new skills in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

Responsibilities

The Summer Intern candidate will work in the IFPCS Analysis team.  The candidate will learn and understand the aircraft control system and the dynamic aircraft behavior in response to induced real or simulated failures.

The Intern candidate will be assigned to the Analysis Team Lead, who will provide assignments.  A modeling and simulation engineer will be assigned to provide coaching and day-to-day assistance as necessary to ensure the work is executed to completion.  The work will be reviewed by the coach and the Analysis Team Lead for completeness and correctness.

The engineering program for Summer Interns is meant to be an exciting learning experience, while contributing to the output of Joby program demands.   The work will be at the forefront of technological advancement in intracity air transportation, which is a nascent industry being led by Joby.  The scope of work for the period will ensure sufficient time is allotted for the opportunity to produce high-quality output.

Required
  • Currently in a full-time University Engineering Degree program and within the final 2-years of completion of study
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering study or related technical discipline: Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems, or derivative Engineering discipline is preferred
  • Willingness to learn the operation of aerospace equipment applicable to Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) aircraft
  • Skills and ability to address technical issues, analyze results, deduce root-cause, and provide ideas to solve basic technical problems
  • Ability to perform modeling and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and/or familiarity using Python
  • Working knowledge and experience with digital Application tools, or the ability to learn and use them to perform their assignments
  • Understanding of the physical and mathematical principles that constitute Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems, or derivative engineering disciplines
  • Proficiency in English, with good verbal communication and writing skills
  • For this role, the candidate must be on site in Joby's Northern California location
Desired
  • Working knowledge or studies of aircraft or relevant equipment, or systems
  • Experience or studies of Electric vehicle or Electric Powertrain technology
  • Familiarity or having learned System Engineering digital modeling tools
Additional Information

The pay range for undergraduate interns, which includes freshman to senior level students, is $22.00 - $31.00/hour. The pay range for graduate interns with a Bachelor, Master, and/or Ph.D. degree is $5,550-$7,800/month.
