Internship Mathematical Modeling information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Mathematical Modeling, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Mathematical Modeling internship, you need solid foundations in mathematics, statistics, and programming, usually supported by coursework in applied mathematics or related fields. Familiarity with technical tools like MATLAB, Python, R, and simulation software is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help interns stand out when working with complex data and interdisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for accurately developing models, interpreting results, and conveying findings to diverse stakeholders.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an Internship in Mathematical Modeling?

As an intern in mathematical modeling, you will likely work on projects that involve creating and analyzing mathematical representations of real-world systems. These can include tasks such as developing predictive models for business processes, optimizing logistics, or simulating scientific phenomena. You'll typically collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and subject matter experts to gather requirements, validate your models, and present findings. This hands-on experience helps you build both your technical and teamwork skills, preparing you for more advanced roles in analytics and modeling.

What is an internship in mathematical modeling?

An internship in mathematical modeling is a temporary, practical work experience where students or recent graduates apply mathematical theories and computational techniques to solve real-world problems. Interns typically work with data analysis, simulation, and mathematical software to develop models in fields such as engineering, finance, or science. These internships help participants gain hands-on experience, improve technical skills, and build professional networks in preparation for future careers.

What is the difference between Internship Mathematical Modeling vs Data Analyst Internship?

AspectInternship Mathematical ModelingData Analyst Internship
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in mathematics, statistics, or related fieldsOften pursuing or recent graduate in statistics, data science, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch-focused, project-based, often in academia or R&D departmentsBusiness or corporate settings, analyzing data to inform decisions
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries like finance, engineering, and tech for modeling complex systemsCommon in marketing, finance, healthcare, and tech for data analysis

Internship Mathematical Modeling and Data Analyst Internships both involve working with data, but modeling internships focus on developing mathematical representations of systems, while data analysis internships emphasize interpreting and visualizing data for decision-making. The choice depends on your interest in theoretical modeling versus practical data insights.

Job description

MERL is seeking an intern to work on mathematical modeling of manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in process modeling with Petri nets and other methods, process simulation, and programming in C\C++, python and or other domain specific modeling languages. Experience programming for embedded Linux environments and experience with programmable logic controllers is highly desirable. The internship start date is flexible and the duration is 3-4 months.
Required Specific Experience
  • Process modeling with Petri nets
  • C\C++, Python

The pay range for this internship position will be 6-8K per month.
Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, Inc. "MERL" provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetics. In addition to federal law requirements, MERL complies with applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment in every location in which the company has facilities. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation and training.
MERL expressly prohibits any form of workplace harassment based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, or veteran status. Improper interference with the ability of MERL's employees to perform their job duties may result in discipline up to and including discharge.
Working at MERL requires full authorization to work in the U.S and access to technology, software and other information that is subject to governmental access control restrictions, due to export controls. Employment is conditioned on continued full authorization to work in the U.S and the availability of government authorization for the release of these items, which might include without limitation, obtaining an export license or other documentation. MERL may delay commencement of employment, rescind an offer of employment, terminate employment, and/or modify job responsibilities, compensation, benefits, and/or access to MERL facilities and information systems, as MERL deems appropriate, to ensure practical compliance with applicable employment law and government access control restrictions.
In addition to base pay, interns receive a relocation stipend, covered travel to and from MERL, and a monthly Charlie Card for local commuting. Interns are invited to participate in weekly social gatherings and professional development opportunities, including research talks by both internal and external speakers. Interns who meet the 90-day waiting period are also eligible for health insurance coverage. MERL provides immigration support for qualified candidates as needed. Employment is considered "at-will," and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary or any other compensation program at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, departmental or Company performance, and market conditions.
