The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program seeks a Teaching Assistant to assist WIOA program participants earn their HSE diploma through one of the four pathways (GED, Regents, NEDP, or prep classes). In addition, co-facilitate small group instruction in a mixed-level classroom and provide consistent and responsive feedback and support to classroom instructors at one of BPL's Adult Learning Centers and/or satellite branches. They will be responsible for coaching students and working collaboratively with instructional staff to meet their needs. The Teaching Assistant, under the guidance of the HSE Program Specialist, monitors and supports the participant's progress and works collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure program quality and goals are being met.

This is a grant funded opportunity, funded through June 30, 2027. Contracts are potentially renewed annually based on performance.

This is a part-time position. The salary for this position is $25 per hour, for up to a 19-hour workweek.

Responsibilities

  • Engage students in a learning community and co-facilitate reading and writing instruction within Pre-HSE/HSE classroom; collaborate with instructors and students to support and enhance lesson plans with a focus on developing math, reading and writing skills, English language literacy skills, and workplace literacy skills. Be able to successfully guide participants through individualized lesson plans.

  • Working with Pre HSE/HSE instructors and case managers to support the needs of participants in order to reach their goal of obtaining their HSE diploma. Use motivational skills and strategies to encourage participants to learn and keep them engaged in their own learning.

  • Be able to instruct, guide, educate, and evaluate participants' work. Record-keeping & data entry of participant's attendance and documentation of progress as required.

  • Assist with outreach, registration, assessments, orientation, and follow-up, including online assessments and participant's self-assessment rubrics, checklists, and portfolios.

  • Assist participants with applying for the GED exam, monitor attendance records of each participant and progress; produce progress reports as needed, and ensure data is entered in a timely manner.

  • Stay abreast of the adult education skills and training to ensure participants have a positive learning experience. Attend required NYC RAEN training and internal monthly team meetings.

  • Provide guidance and support to the instructional staff and reinforce participants skills to ensure they are successful on the TABE assessment.

  • Travel to multiple locations as needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required

  • Strong knowledge of ABE/HSE skills to support students and instructors, because of the internet-based nature of the job, must have excellent computer skills and can work with multiple types of learning management platforms such as Schoology and Google Classroom, and software programs.

  • Successful experience working in an adult education learning environment.

  • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies and adult education skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment and have strong organizational, communication, and technology skills.

  • Ability to travel to multiple locations when required.

Work schedules: M/W 10-2, T/TH 3-8, and some Saturdays 10-4. However, please note that schedule is subject to change based on the department's needs and class schedules.

Work locations vary from Central, Eastern Parkway, New Lots, Flatbush, Pacific, Bedford, and other satellite branches.
