Job description

Description Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking several Homework Help Lead Tutors who are passionate about serving youth and families. These Lead Tutors will manage the delivery of the K-12 Homework Help after school tutoring program. These positions are also responsible for providing academic and social support to students, overseeing the day-to-day program activities, managing the program space and routines, and supporting volunteer tutors.

HCL Homework Help is a drop-in tutoring program for youths in grades K-12 to work with adult staff and volunteers on their homework assignments in a free, safe, and welcoming space after school. The focus of this program is to provide students with one-on-one and small group support in understanding and completing the learning tasks they have been assigned by their teachers at school. Most students who come to HCL after school academic support programs are recent immigrants and may be likely to encounter cultural or language barriers as they build their academic skills.

Location and hours: These positions will be located at several different locations. Lead tutors work approximately 8 - 12 hours per week during the afternoons and evenings throughout the school year. A list of library locations can be found here: Brooklyn Park Library: Wednesday and Thursday 4 p.m

- 7:30 pm Eden Prairie Library: Tuesday and Wednesday 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Hopkins Library: Monday 4 p.m

- 7 p.m. and Saturday 3 p.m. - 5 p.m

About these position types: These are limited duration (temporary) part time, non-benefit earning positions expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension. These positions are internally classified as an Office Specialist III. Click here to view the job classification specification.

In these positions, you will: Direct the daily operation of the after school tutoring program for K-12 students or the reading support program for K-5 students. Establish and communicate program routines and norms with students, volunteers, and families. Provide orientation, coaching, and training to volunteer tutors.

Learn about the Let's Read literacy support program and assist Let's Read program volunteers, caregivers, and students during Let's Read Lead Tutor absences. Support library community engagement and outreach for the HCL after school academic support programs. Collect and report program data such as monthly attendance, reading assessments, participant surveys, and family engagement activities.

Become familiar with and promote library resources for supporting student academic success to students, families, and volunteers. Participate in required meetings and training sessions. Need to have: One of the following: Two years or more of office clerical experience.

18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program. One year of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services Pathway Training Program. An approved combination of post high school education and office clerical experience to equal at least two years.

Nice to have: Experience: Working or volunteering for Hennepin County. Leading a youth program or working with youth in a volunteer setting. Tutoring youth in subjects such as math, language arts, and science.

Working with Hennepin County programs. Ability to work with multiple audiences, including children, families, volunteers, and staff members with cultural backgrounds other than your own. Familiarity with best practices in tutoring and academic skill building.

Strong knowledge in literacy and mathematical concepts, and familiarity with best practices in tutoring or academic skill building practices. Strong organizational and communication skills. Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
