Job Description
Job Posting: Writing Center Tutor
La Sierra University
Position:
Writing Center Tutor
Location: HUM 101, La Sierra University
Position Overview: Writing Center Tutor (Student Position)
Writing Center Tutors will meet one-on-one in the Writing Center and online with current La Sierra University students seeking assistance with academic and professional writing projects. Students with a solid grasp of the English language and strong writing skills from all disciplines/majors are welcome and encouraged to apply. After receiving training, tutors are responsible for creating and scheduling coaching appointments online and in person as requested. They should foster a supportive and inclusive environment for all writers.
Required Experience:
• Strong communication skills and a passion for helping others
• Public speaking skills encouraged
• Completion of ENGL 111, 112, and 113 with an A grade or above; OR completion of AP Language or AP Literature with a score of 4 or above
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

• Must be a current La Sierra University student
  • Due to the training time required, applicants should be available to work at the Writing Center for at least one year, including any time after graduation if applicable

Required Skills: Tutors support student writing for all subjects and all levels of study offered through La Sierra University. They help peers develop their writing skills, enhance their critical thinking and reading skills, and foster a love for effective communication. Tutors are expected to function independently and responsibly in a minimally-supervised environment, collaborating with instructors and professors to improve student skills. To achieve these ends, tutors must have a solid background in the English language, be strong writers, possess grammar and editing skills, and be willing to seek clarification in unfamiliar fields. Professional communication skills and punctuality are essential. It is helpful if tutors speak more than one language. Tutors will also be trained and gain experience in leading small workshop groups. Previous tutoring experience is not required but is desirable; regardless, all tutors will undergo training before helping students.
To Apply:
  • Submit the online application including your resume
  • In place of the cover letter upload, please submit an academic writing sample (any field, no creative pieces)
  • List your availability and desired number of work hours per week
  • if applicants meet qualifications, they will be contacted to schedule a grammar test and interview.

We look forward to seeing how you can contribute to our vibrant academic community!
