Job description

Vanderheyden is seeking a High School Math Teacher to teach students at our certified 853 school to teach students with special needs the fundamentals of high school mathematics.

Primary Duties & Essential Functions

  • Deliver the primary instruction to students as scheduled
  • Prepare lesson plans and instructional material based on the New York State Standards
  • Evaluate and recommend instructional material
  • Evaluate and record academic progress of each student
  • Maintain and follow the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each classified student
  • Maintain and follow the Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) for each student
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment within the classroom
  • Assess and record program outcomes on agency database
  • Assigns tasks and monitors performance of teacher aide
  • Assume other responsibilities that belong to all education staff members such as participation in the behavior management program, insuring the health, safety, and supervision of students, and enforcing the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
  • Initiate communication and consultation with other staff in response to student concerns
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with all agency staff
  • Develop supportive and nurturing relationships with students while consistently reinforcing program
  • Expectations
  • Participate fully and effectively in school meetings or teams including Committee on Special Education meetings, Department meetings, and teacher meetings.
  • Manage and maintain classroom resources

Required Education, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelor Degree required, Masters preferred

  • New York State Teacher certification in special education & mathematics
  • Experience teaching Math grades 7-12

  • Experience with at-risk youth and/or youth with special education needs preferred

Abilities and Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work a first shift, 36 hour work week

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
    Willingness to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse population.

  • Ability to deal positively with changing priorities in a fast paced environment.

  • Display a positive, professional and proactive attitude to accomplish quality work that is in line with the agency’s mission statement.

  • Seek opinions, alternative viewpoints in decision making. Understand and respect the expertise and experience of others, appreciate the different views, and the perspective and limitations of other individuals.

  • Exhibits a professional, courteous demeanor with internal and external constituents

Pay: $55,000- $65,000 per year
