What is material handling?

Material handling refers to the movement, protection, storage, and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. It involves a variety of equipment and systems, such as conveyors, forklifts, storage racks, and automated systems, to ensure materials are efficiently transported and stored. Effective material handling is crucial for improving workflow, reducing costs, and maintaining workplace safety.

Are jobs in material handling in demand?

While the positions are becoming more automated, the operators of material handling systems are becoming more vital to the efficient management of inventory and order fulfillment. The two main types of jobs are manual handling, which is becoming less common, and automated handling, which includes the use of various machines to protect workers and make supply systems flow more smoothly. Increased automation results in a lowering of demand for labor, meaning that material handling should not be considered a long-term career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a material handler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Material Handler, you need basic math skills, physical stamina, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems, forklifts, pallet jacks, and safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Strong teamwork, reliability, and effective communication are important soft skills that set top performers apart. These abilities ensure efficient inventory movement, workplace safety, and smooth operations in fast-paced environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a material handling role, and how can I prepare for them?

Material Handling professionals often face challenges such as managing heavy loads efficiently, working in fast-paced environments, and adhering to strict safety protocols. To prepare, it's important to develop physical stamina, learn proper lifting techniques, and become familiar with the operation of equipment like forklifts or pallet jacks. Additionally, practicing good communication skills is essential, as you'll frequently coordinate with warehouse staff and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow and prevent errors or accidents.

Job description

At Burwell Material Handling, people come first. Our team, our customers, and the communities we serve are the reason we exist. We're who we are today because of the people behind us. Every team member, every connection, and every customer relationship helped shape this company.

We've built our reputation by delivering smarter, safer material handling across the full lifecycle: equipment sales, rentals, service and parts, fleet telematics, and engineered automation solutions. We do it with the kind of personal attention that comes from being neither too big to care nor too small to keep up. We listen first, we move fast, and we keep our word.

Now we're growing, and we're looking for forward-thinking, motivated teammates who want to help build something meaningful. Here, your contributions count and your voice is heard.

About the Role:
We’re hiring an Outside Sales Representative to take charge of driving equipment sales and building long-term customer relationships in a defined territory. This isn’t just about selling forklifts—it’s about solving problems, offering practical solutions, and being the go-to partner for our customers. You’ll have the autonomy to manage your accounts, the backing of a team that moves fast, and the opportunity to make a real difference as we continue growing. If you're motivated, competitive, and want to sell for a company that values people and performance, we want to hear from you!

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain customer relationships, building a strong sales pipeline within the assigned territory

  • Implement strategic plans to identify new opportunities and increase overall sales and profitability

  • Conduct detailed customer needs analyses to create tailored proposals and solutions

  • Stay up to date on industry trends, competitive products, and market conditions

  • Maintain working knowledge of used equipment values and support trade-in evaluations

  • Assist customers with financing options for new, used, and rental equipment

  • Attend training sessions and seminars to continuously improve sales effectiveness

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For:

  • At least 3 years of outside sales experience, preferably in the material handling or equipment industry

  • Working knowledge of lift trucks, aerial equipment, racking, dock, and door equipment

  • Self-motivated with a track record of prospecting and closing new business opportunities

  • Ability to tailor sales conversations using effective questioning and listening skills

  • Willingness to travel throughout the assigned territory

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a larger team

  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record

Benefits:
All offers are contingent on passing a pre-employment drug test and background check. Burwell Material Handling is a drug-free workplace.

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Excellent benefits starting day one – Medical, Dental, Vision, Accident, Short-Term Disability, Life Insurance, and 401K with Company Match
  • Progressive Paid Time Off and Holidays – starting with 3 weeks PTO in your first year
  • Paid parental leave for moms and dads
  • Opportunities for growth and internal promotion
  • Annual Community Impact Day – paid volunteer time in the places we work and live

We are committed to fair, consistent treatment and providing equal growth opportunities for all team members. Burwell Material Handling is an equal opportunity employer as defined by federal, state, or local law.

If you're looking to build a meaningful career, we’re excited to support your goals and help you grow with us.
