They work for companies like Masterworks, which allows individuals to invest in shares of fine art by renowned artists. Their roles may include art research, valuation, logistics, and ensuring the physical and financial security of the artworks. These professionals often have backgrounds in art history, finance, or museum studies. They serve as the link between investors, artists, and the art market, helping make art investment more accessible.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in the art investment sector at companies like Masterworks?

Professionals in the art investment sector, such as those at Masterworks, often navigate challenges like evaluating the authenticity and market value of artworks, staying informed about art market trends, and balancing investor expectations with the inherent unpredictability of art as an asset class. Exceptional research skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for building investment cases and collaborating with clients and team members. These competencies are crucial for accurately evaluating art assets, advising clients, and making sound investment decisions in the alternative asset market.

Job description

About Masterworks

Masterworks Advisers is a Registered Investment Adviser that advises clients on art-related investment products. We allow anyone to invest in SEC-qualified shares of multi-million dollar paintings by artists like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso. We have introduced over 1 million individuals to the $2.2 trillion art market.

Masterworks has been covered by The New York Times, CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times, and was recognized as one of the Top 50 Startups in the US by LinkedIn. In 2021, we achieved unicorn status with a $110M Series A at a valuation exceeding $1 billion. We are based at 1 World Trade Center in New York City's Financial District.

Why Masterworks?

If you answered "Yes" to any of the below, we'd love to hear from you!

  • Are you passionate about democratizing alternative investments?
  • Are you interested in working for a disruptive start-up, focused on a new asset class?
  • Do you enjoy meaningful work that has a noticeable impact on business performance?
Position Overview

As a Senior Investment Adviser for Masterworks Advisers, you will be a trusted, high-impact contributor on our advisory team - bringing deep financial expertise and a proven track record of client relationship management, and play a pivotal role in growing our investor community - whether guiding prospective investors through their first art investment or nurturing relationships with our established member base.

You will be matched to one of two senior advisory tracks based on mutual fit identified during the interview process:

  • New Investor Onboarding (Senior): Lead complex onboarding engagements with high-net-worth and sophisticated prospective clients. Set the standard for advisory quality, providing investment recommendations on fine art and other real or digital assets (gold, Bitcoin, etc.) .
  • Existing Investor Growth (Senior): Own a portfolio of established investors, driving significant repeat investment activity through proactive outreach, annual portfolio reviews discussing highlights and lowlights, and strategic presentation of new offerings. Maximize investor lifetime value and wallet share.

In either track, you will combine expertise in financial markets, portfolio construction, and macroeconomics with refined relationship skills to deliver an exceptional investor experience. Comprehensive training on the art market, art as an asset class, and Masterworks offerings is provided.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a senior adviser to prospective or existing investors, delivering highly consultative guidance on blue-chip art as an alternative asset and other real or digital assets (gold, Bitcoin, etc.)
  • Lead portfolio reviews, present new artwork investment opportunities, and drive investment decisions with confidence and credibility
  • Strategically re-engage high-value inactive or lapsed investors and convert them back into active platform members (existing investor track)
  • Cultivate and grow deep, long-term relationships with a sophisticated investor base to maximize investment activity and lifetime value
  • Leverage CRM tools and data dashboards to optimize pipeline management, outreach strategy, and performance metrics
  • Ideate, design, and test advanced strategies to identify new growth vectors and consistently exceed KPIs
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Marketing, and FinOps to drive specific business objectives
Team Overview
  • Masterworks Advisers is a team of ~15 advisers and growing, with Senior Advisers playing a leadership role within the group
  • Advisers come from diverse professional backgrounds; Senior Advisers are expected to model excellence and raise the bar for the team
  • Track placement (new investor onboarding vs. existing investor growth) is determined collaboratively during the interview process
Requirements & Preferred Skills
  • As a regulated entity, licensing is a requirement within the first 90 days of the company. Licensing is a straightforward process for anyone financially-minded. You will spend 20-40 hours studying and have multiple attempts to pass the Series 65.
  • 5+ years of experience in investment advising, financial advising, or a similar client-facing role
  • Demonstrated track record of managing high-value client relationships and achieving strong revenue or growth outcomes
  • Ability to communicate with sophistication, authority, and professionalism with high-profile and high-net-worth investors (verbal and written)
  • Deep interest in alternative assets, financial markets, and macroeconomics
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, relationship-building, and time management skills
  • Highly results-driven with a competitive, ownership-oriented mentality
  • Proven ability to lead and perform in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Proficiency with CRM tools strongly preferred (e.g., HubSpot)
  • Passion for the "business of art" is a plus - no prior art knowledge required
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation range: $150,000 - $200,000

Benefits include: Daily catered lunches Free admission to art museums and galleries Health, dental, and vision coverage with FSA options Paid Parental Leave PTO and 401k Discounted Equinox membership Happy hours, company outings, social clubs, and more

Employment Type: FULL_TIME
