Marine Civil Engineer - BRAND NEW

ROLE FOR OUR CLIENT

Location: Houston, Texas (Hybrid)

Our client a leading Houston-based engineering company is seeking an experienced Marine Civil Engineer to join its expanding maritime and forensic engineering team. The successful candidate will contribute to a broad range of engineering consultancy assignments across the ports, marine, offshore, and energy sectors, providing technical expertise in the assessment, design, investigation, and rehabilitation of maritime infrastructure.

The role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects involving nearshore and waterfront civil structures, while also supporting marine insurers, Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Clubs, legal teams, and asset owners in the investigation and resolution of engineering and insurance claims.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Undertaking engineering assessments, inspections, and condition surveys of marine and nearshore civil infrastructure.
• Designing, assessing, and developing repair solutions for waterfront structures, including quay walls, jetties, piers, dolphins, bulkheads, retaining walls, breakwaters, revetments, mooring systems, and marine terminals.
• Evaluating the structural performance and integrity of maritime assets subjected to operational loading, vessel impacts, storm events, and environmental deterioration.
• Carrying out site inspections and forensic investigations following incidents affecting marine infrastructure.
• Preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and client deliverables.
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, contractors, surveyors, and clients on both domestic and international assignments.

Claims and Technical Advisory

An important aspect of the role will involve providing technical support on marine insurance and forensic engineering matters, including:

• Investigating damage to ports, terminals, and marine infrastructure resulting from vessel allisions, collisions, severe weather events, construction activities, or operational incidents.
• Determining the cause and extent of structural damage and developing practical repair recommendations.
• Supporting marine insurance claims through technical assessments, engineering evaluations, and cost analyses.
• Working closely with Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Clubs, marine insurers, hull and machinery underwriters, loss adjusters, solicitors, and shipowners.
• Reviewing contractor claims, repair proposals, engineering documentation, and technical evidence.
• Assisting with expert witness appointments, arbitration proceedings, and litigation support through the preparation of clear, well-reasoned technical reports.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration, or eligibility to obtain licensure.
• At least 8 years' experience in maritime, coastal, or waterfront civil engineering.
• A sound understanding of reinforced concrete, steel, and marine foundation systems.
• Experience assessing and designing marine and nearshore civil structures.
• Familiarity with industry standards including PIANC, ASCE, ACI and AISC.
• Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.

Desirable Experience

• Forensic engineering and failure investigations.
• Marine insurance claims and technical dispute resolution.
• Working with Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Clubs, marine insurers, or loss adjusters.
• Nearshore engineering, coastal processes, scour assessment, vessel berthing loads, corrosion, and durability of marine structures.
• Port operations, marine construction, and asset management.
• Providing technical support in arbitration, mediation, or litigation.
