What is a Marine GIS Analyst?
A Marine GIS Analyst specializes in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze and visualize marine and coastal data. They work with spatial datasets related to oceanography, habitat mapping, maritime navigation, and environmental monitoring. Their role involves processing and interpreting geospatial information to support conservation efforts, resource management, and marine policy development. They often collaborate with scientists, government agencies, and environmental organizations to provide data-driven insights. Proficiency in GIS software, remote sensing, and spatial analysis is essential for success in this role.
What are the typical responsibilities and daily tasks of a Marine GIS Analyst?
Marine GIS Analysts are typically responsible for collecting, managing, and analyzing spatial data related to oceans, coasts, and marine habitats. On a daily basis, you might work on creating detailed GIS maps, analyzing satellite imagery, integrating multiple datasets, and preparing reports or visualizations for stakeholders. Collaboration is common, as you'll often work alongside marine biologists, environmental scientists, or policy experts. This role may also require fieldwork to gather data or verify results, as well as participating in team meetings to discuss project progress and goals. The position offers a dynamic mix of technical, analytical, and collaborative tasks that help drive important marine conservation and management initiatives.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Marine GIS Analyst position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Marine GIS Analyst, you need a solid understanding of marine science, spatial analysis, and GIS principles, typically supported by a degree in geography, environmental science, or a related field. Expertise in GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, along with familiarity with remote sensing, GPS systems, and relevant certifications like GISP, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for accurately mapping marine environments, supporting research, and informing decision-making in environmental management projects.

Job description
CSS is seeking to hire a GIS Analyst to join the NOAA Seascape Ecology and Analytics (SEA) Branch! We need a qualified individual to process, analyze and manage geospatial data to support a variety of environmental assessment, restoration, and habitat modeling projects. This position requires proficiency with GIS software and the technical aspects of processing and managing large and complex geospatial datasets. Familiarity with coastal, marine, or freshwater datasets are desirable. The ideal candidate will drive innovative GIS solutions, engage, and work closely with a project team, and have excellent problem-solving skills.
The NOAA Seascape Ecology and Analytics (SEA) Branch is an interdisciplinary research group of contract and federal employees within NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (http://coastalscience.noaa.gov/), a nationally recognized scientific research program that conducts spatial ecological analysis, statistical modeling, ecological forecasting, and predictive mapping to support marine ecosystem management, conservation, and spatial planning.
Responsibilities
