JOB TITLE: GIS Analyst I

STARTING PAY: $20.68 TO $30.91 DOQ
SUMMARY
As a GIS Analyst I, you'll help maintain and improve the City's maps and spatial data, ensuring it's accurate, usable, and up to date within established standards and workflows. This position supports a wide range of City services by maintaining and analyzing data for parks, planning, water, wastewater, stormwater, zoning, public safety, and more. The work you do will be used by planners, engineers, field personnel, public safety, and other departments across the organization.
Day to day, this role focuses on editing and maintaining GIS datasets, creating maps, running spatial queries, and occasionally verifying information in the field, while following approved processes and documenting your work. You'll also help keep web maps current, respond to mapping and data requests from City staff through established intake channels, and contribute to planning and projects that depend on good location data.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains and updates GIS datasets in accordance with established standards, procedures, and workflows.
  • Produces maps and performs standard spatial analysis using approved tools, templates, and methodologies.
  • Performs initial quality control (QA/QC) on GIS data, analysis, and mapping products
  • Assists with testing, validation, and user support activities for GIS applications, tools, and workflows under established guidance and procedures.
  • Gathers and documents user requests, operational needs, and issue reports using established intake and tracking processes.
  • Communicates task status, technical issues, workflow concerns, non-routine requests, and identified data discrepancies to senior GIS staff or the GIS Manager.
  • Identifies data issues and workflow improvement opportunities and communicates recommendations for review through established processes.
  • Provides standard GIS information, map products, and operational support; escalates complex or non-standard requests to senior GIS staff or the GIS Manager.
  • Assists in the creation and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) by documenting routine workflows and approved process updates.
  • Maintains project documentation, task tracking, and communication in accordance with established team coordination processes.
  • Works collaboratively and professionally with team members, departments, and stakeholders to support effective service delivery, communication, and project coordination.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in GIS, Geography, Earth Science, Computer Science, Construction Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A minimum of two years of practical CAD/GIS experience required. Experience supporting GIS data maintenance, mapping, analysis, or user support activities required. GIS Certification or ESRI training preferred.
A valid Texas Driver's License is required.
Due to the level of access to potentially sensitive information, successful completion of a criminal background check is required. Background check must confirm eligibility for Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) system access and CJIS eligibility must be maintained for the duration of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of GIS principles, geospatial analysis, mapping standards, and spatial data management.
  • Ability to maintain, edit, validate, and analyze GIS and tabular datasets using established workflows and standards.
  • Ability to produce maps, reports, and standard spatial analysis products using approved GIS tools and methodologies.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) activities on GIS data and mapping products.
  • Ability to document workflows, maintain project records, and support standard operating procedure development.
  • Ability to gather, document, and communicate user requests, operational needs, and technical issues.
  • Ability to identify workflow improvement opportunities and communicate recommendations through established review processes.
  • Familiarity with engineering, architectural, or utility mapping terminology and scales.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and similar business software.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, departments, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines in a team-oriented environment.
