Map Annotation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Map Annotation position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Map Annotation specialist, you should have excellent attention to detail, spatial reasoning abilities, and familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) or digital mapping platforms. Proficiency with annotation tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, or proprietary annotation software is often required, and some roles may prefer prior experience or training in cartography or remote sensing. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow complex guidelines are valuable soft skills in this position. These skills and qualities are vital because accuracy and consistency in annotating map data directly influence the quality of geographic datasets used in applications like navigation, autonomous vehicles, and urban planning.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Map Annotation?

In a Map Annotation role, your day often involves reviewing and labeling satellite imagery or digital maps using specialized software to identify features like roads, buildings, or natural landmarks. You may work independently or as part of a team, following detailed guidelines to ensure consistency and high accuracy across the dataset. Collaboration with supervisors or quality assurance teams is common to resolve ambiguities and uphold annotation standards. The work is usually computer-based, and you might attend regular meetings to discuss updates to project requirements or annotation protocols. Over time, you can expand your responsibilities by training new teammates or moving into lead annotator or project coordinator roles.

What is a Map Annotation job?

A Map Annotation job involves labeling, tagging, or annotating geographic data to improve the accuracy of digital maps. This can include identifying roads, landmarks, businesses, addresses, and other points of interest. Annotators help train AI and mapping systems by reviewing and verifying location-based information. The role requires attention to detail, spatial awareness, and sometimes familiarity with local geography. These jobs are often remote and may be project-based.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Apptronik is seeking an Integration Engineer to join our Fleet Connect team. As we scale the deployment of Apollo at customer sites, you will be the primary engineer responsible for integrating humanoid robotic systems into live production facilities. Your role is to bridge the gap between our advanced software stack and traditional industrial automation. You will ensure seamless communication between Apollo, hardware safety systems (e.g., PLCs, light curtains), and enterprise management software (WMS/ERP). You will be instrumental in creating the workflows and interfaces that allow our robots to navigate, execute tasks, and report health metrics within complex, dynamic environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES or KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Industrial Automation: Link robotic platforms to traditional automation systems, including PLCs and hardware safety systems such as light curtains and emergency stops.
  • Enterprise Software Orchestration: Facilitate job and work orchestration by integrating with customer ERP and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) via REST APIs or message brokers.
  • Workflow Development: Design and implement intuitive interfaces and workflows for facility mapping, map annotation, labeling, and work ingestion queues.
  • Fleet Coordination: Develop and maintain systems for coordinating and monitoring robot job progress, navigation, and scheduling.
  • Metrics & Monitoring: Implement robust monitoring solutions (e.g., Grafana, MQTT) to track and report on fleet health and performance metrics.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex robot integration issues, debugging hardware-software interfaces in real-time environments.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Interface with UI/UX, systems, software, hardware, and applications teams to deliver features that satisfy system-wide requirements.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Programming Proficiency: Expertise in Python, C++ or TypeScript.
  • Industrial Protocols: Hands-on experience with OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus TCP for PLC and safety system integration.
  • Enterprise Integration: Experience interfacing with REST APIs, MQTT, AMQP, or Kafka for WMS/ERP connectivity.
  • Messaging & Internal Comms: Proficiency with gRPC and Protocol Buffers for low-latency distributed communication.
  • User Interface & Experience: Track record of collaboration with UI/UX designers and end-users to iterate on intuitive dashboards and control interfaces.
  • Version Control: Demonstrated competence with Git or version control of distributed systems.
  • Infrastructure Tools: Familiarity with Linux, Docker, and containerization technologies.
  • Fleet Management: Prior experience in human-AMR planning, task allocation, and multi-agent coordination.
  • System Design: Strong understanding of distributed execution and software design patterns.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional, full-time experience building and maintaining reliable, scalable systems.
  • Experience architecting workflow definitions for autonomous systems and/or integrating robotics systems into production environments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSย

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen
  • Hearing and speech to communicate
