What is manufacturing?

Manufacturing is the process of converting raw materials, components, or parts into finished goods through the use of machinery, tools, and labor. It is a critical sector in the economy, producing products for consumers and businesses alike. Manufacturing can include everything from small-scale craft production to large-scale industrial operations, covering industries such as automotive, electronics, food processing, and more. The process often involves design, engineering, assembly, quality control, and distribution steps.

What is a manufacturing job?

Manufacturing jobs involve creating new products and goods. Manufacturers use raw materials or separate components to build something entirely new. Whether it’s chemical, physical, or mechanical, as long as you are creating a product, you are working in manufacturing. The only exception is construction, which is considered separate from manufacturing. Manufacturing jobs include making prepackaged food or beverages, creating computers and electronics, and producing clothing. Bakers, printers, tailors, furniture builders, and woodworkers are all considered manufacturers. Most manufacturers work in a factory, mill, or plant, but you can also find work in labs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a manufacturing role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a manufacturing role, you need a strong understanding of production processes, quality control, and safety protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with industrial machinery, lean manufacturing principles, and systems such as ERP or CAD software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills in this environment. These skills and qualifications are important to ensure efficient production, minimize errors, and maintain a safe and collaborative workplace.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in manufacturing, and how can these be addressed?

One common challenge in manufacturing roles is maintaining production efficiency while ensuring high quality and safety standards. Employees may face issues such as equipment malfunctions, supply chain delays, or adapting to new technologies. These challenges can be addressed by fostering strong teamwork, participating in continuous improvement programs, and staying up-to-date with training in safety procedures and equipment operation. Open communication with supervisors and colleagues also helps resolve issues quickly and maintain a smooth workflow.

What is the difference between Manufacturing vs Assembly Line Worker?

AspectManufacturingAssembly Line Worker
CredentialsOften requires technical skills or certifications in machinery or processesTypically requires basic skills and on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentFactories, production plants, involving various manufacturing processesAssembly lines within factories, focusing on assembling products
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing sectors like automotive, electronics, and consumer goodsPrimarily found in automotive, electronics, and appliance manufacturing
Job ScopeEncompasses entire production processes, including planning and quality controlFocuses on assembling specific parts or products

Manufacturing involves comprehensive production processes, often requiring technical skills, while Assembly Line Workers focus on assembling products on specific lines with less technical training. Both roles are essential in the manufacturing industry but differ in scope and skill requirements.

What are examples of manufacturing jobs?

Manufacturing jobs include roles such as assembly line workers, machine operators, quality control inspectors, production supervisors, and maintenance technicians. These positions often require knowledge of tools, machinery, and safety protocols, and may involve working in factories or production plants with shift schedules.

What do you do in a manufacturing job?

A manufacturing job involves operating machinery, assembling products, and ensuring quality control in a factory setting. Workers may use tools, follow safety protocols, and work in shifts to meet production targets.

Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer

Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer leads and mentors a cross-functional engineering team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, driving process development, continuous improvement, and scalable production. This role focuses on optimizing manufacturing output, supporting project-based and escalated production issues, and ensuring that facility and product goals are consistently achieved. The Manufacturing Engineer works predominantly on the manufacturing floor, collaborating closely with production, engineering, quality, and operations teams to identify and address process gaps, equipment challenges, and material flow issues. The position also plays a key role in translating engineering bills of materials (EBOMs) to manufacturing bills of materials (MBOMs), scaling existing lines, and setting up new manufacturing lines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and direct an engineering team that includes a mechanical designer, manufacturing engineer, and multiple engineering technicians.
  • Support project-based initiatives and escalated work items in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Drive process development efforts to optimize manufacturing output, including cycle time, yield, and overall efficiency.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, quality, and operations departments to ensure product and facility output goals are met.
  • Work predominantly on the manufacturing floor to understand and resolve gaps, challenges, and opportunities related to processes, equipment, and material flow.
  • Lead production issue escalation and on-floor troubleshooting for mechanical, electrical, and process-related problems, ensuring rapid containment and resolution.
  • Coach, demonstrate, and implement lean manufacturing techniques to support continuous improvement and standardized work.
  • Communicate regularly with leadership and department heads to summarize progress toward high-priority projects and operational goals.
  • Design and optimize inverter assembly processes to improve performance and enable scalable operations.
  • Translate EBOMs to MBOMs within a PLM-integrated environment, ensuring accurate material consumption and manufacturability.
  • Support the setup, ramp-up, and scaling of new and existing manufacturing lines.
  • Utilize Manufacturing Execution System (MES) integration and NetSuite ERP for routing, operations, and work order management.
  • Apply 3D CAD tools, ideally CREO or SolidWorks, to design fixtures, layouts, and validate product manufacturability.
  • Use kanban systems and other lean tools to manage material flow and improve material consumption accuracy.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering a collaborative, high-performance team environment.
  • Manage and coordinate project activities, ensuring timelines, deliverables, and manufacturing objectives are achieved.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical Engineering, with Mechanical Engineering also considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing engineering role.
  • Strong working knowledge of NetSuite routing, operations, and work order management.
  • Proven ability to translate EBOMs to MBOMs in a PLM-integrated environment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, ideally CREO or SolidWorks, for designing fixtures, layouts, and validating product manufacturability.
  • Hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering, including process development and optimization.
  • Demonstrated capability in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing methodologies.
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution System (MES) integration.
  • Ability to lead production issue escalation and perform on-floor troubleshooting for mechanical, electrical, and process issues.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience designing and optimizing inverter assembly processes.
  • Experience in standardizing work and supporting line setup and ramp-ups.
  • Familiarity with kanban systems for material and workflow management.
  • Understanding of material consumption accuracy and its impact on manufacturing performance.
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and engineering technicians.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with leadership and cross-functional teams.
