Job description

The Manufacturing/Automation Design Engineer will support a Layout Group by developing and integrating manufacturing layouts for Vision, Site, Future, and Current Production projects. This role is responsible for designing efficient manufacturing systems, supporting automation integration, and leading cross-functional layout activities from concept through installation. The ideal candidate will have experience with manufacturing facility layouts, automation systems, PLCs, and 2D AutoCAD.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate manufacturing layouts for multiple North America facilities, including Body, Paint, General Assembly, Press Operations, Conveyors, Casting, Engine, Transmission, Battery, and Electrified platforms.
  • Design fixtures, conveyors, and welding stations to optimize plant layout, material flow, and production efficiency.
  • Create and maintain installation-level layout drawings, cell building layouts, and wiring layouts using 2D AutoCAD while ensuring compliance with company engineering and manufacturing standards.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource and Subject Matter Expert for plant personnel, Manufacturing Engineering (ME) centers, and program teams.
  • Lead layout integration meetings, coordinate with cross-functional engineering teams, maintain issue logs, and drive projects from concept through installation.
  • Incorporate input from multiple engineering disciplines to develop lean, efficient manufacturing layouts while minimizing floor space requirements and facility modifications.
  • Manage, organize, and maintain layout drawing files, ensuring all documentation meets the Layout Group standards.
  • Support automation integration by editing and troubleshooting PLC programs and performing basic robot programming as required.
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, and support mechanical components and manufacturing equipment to improve production efficiency.
  • Analyze manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement, increased productivity, and equipment reliability.
  • Provide technical support during equipment installation, launch activities, and production startup.
  • Perform additional engineering and project support duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience with manufacturing layout development and integration.
  • Proficiency with 2D AutoCAD.
  • Experience with automated manufacturing systems, conveyors, fixtures, and welding equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of PLC troubleshooting and robot programming.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, plant layouts, and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional meetings and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
