How much do manifolds jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for manifolds in the United States is $26.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $31.01 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working with manifolds in industrial settings?

Engineers working with manifolds often encounter challenges such as ensuring leak-tight connections, managing complex piping layouts, and selecting appropriate materials for specific process requirements. Additionally, they must coordinate closely with maintenance and operations teams to minimize downtime during installation or repairs. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential for addressing these challenges and ensuring system reliability.

What are manifolds in mathematics and engineering?

In mathematics, a manifold is a topological space that locally resembles Euclidean space, meaning that around every point, it looks like regular n-dimensional space. Manifolds are foundational in areas such as geometry, calculus, and physics, particularly in understanding complex shapes and spaces. In engineering, especially in automotive applications, a manifold refers to a component that channels fluids or gases, such as an intake or exhaust manifold in an engine. The term can thus refer to both abstract mathematical concepts and tangible mechanical parts, depending on the context.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manifold Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manifold Technician, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of fluid dynamics, and a technical diploma or relevant certification in industrial maintenance or engineering. Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, manifold assembly, and the use of diagnostic tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient assembly and maintenance of manifold systems, which are critical for the reliability of industrial and manufacturing operations.

What is the difference between Manifolds vs Pipefitters?

AspectManifoldsPipefitters
CredentialsRelevant certifications in plumbing and HVACPlumbing and pipefitting certifications, apprenticeships
Work EnvironmentIndustrial, commercial, HVAC systemsConstruction sites, industrial plants, piping systems
Industry UsageUsed in HVAC, plumbing, fluid control systemsUsed in piping installation, maintenance, and repair

Manifolds and pipefitters both work with piping systems, but manifolds focus on assembling and managing fluid distribution through specialized components, often in HVAC or plumbing systems. Pipefitters install and repair piping in various settings, including construction and industrial facilities. While their skills overlap, manifolds are more specialized in fluid control components, whereas pipefitters handle broader piping installation and maintenance tasks.

Job description

The Design Release Engineer for powertrain exhaust manifolds is responsible for the design, development, and technical leadership in the creation, validation, and release of exhaust manifolds and sub-components Stellantis' vehicles. The role involves driving the design through all phases of the product lifecycle, including design concept, engineering validation, and production release through PPAP (Production Part Approval Process). Exhaust manifold sub-components may include seals, fasteners, spacers, etc...
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Development:
  • Lead the design of exhaust manifold components, ensuring alignment with vehicle and powertrain requirements.
  • Develop and refine concepts for exhaust manifold components, based on functional, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Support CAD modeling, FEA (Finite Element Analysis), and other design validation methods to ensure structural and functional integrity, and compliance with standards.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate exhaust manifold components into the overall powertrain architecture.

Release & Program Management:
  • Manage design release activities from early concept through production, including the timely completion of B-Sample, C-Sample, X0, X1, X2, and X3 milestones.
  • Own the Bill of Materials (BOM) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) for powertrain exhaust manifold components.
  • Ensure all parts meet quality, cost, and timing requirements.
  • Drive the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for powertrain exhaust manifold components, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and customer specifications.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, suppliers, and quality, to ensure the successful release and implementation of designs.

Technical Guidance & Problem Solving:
  • Provide technical leadership and support during the development and production stages to resolve design issues, material selection challenges, and process-related problems.
  • Lead DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and other risk assessment activities to ensure design robustness and mitigate potential issues.
  • Participate in the development of testing strategies for powertrain exhaust manifold components.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Work closely with suppliers to ensure design feasibility, cost competitiveness, and manufacturability of powertrain exhaust manifold components.
  • Collaborate with validation teams to define and implement validation testing, ensuring powertrain exhaust manifold components meet functional and performance metrics.
  • Partner with vehicle integration teams to ensure proper fitment, safety, and integration of powertrain exhaust manifold components into the overall vehicle platform.

Documentation & Reporting:
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including design specifications, drawings, test plans, and validation reports.
  • Ensure that all technical documentation is up-to-date and aligns with program timelines and PPAP requirements.
  • Report on project status, timelines, and risk assessments to senior management and stakeholders.
