What is a manifold?

In mathematics, a manifold is a topological space that locally resembles Euclidean space, meaning that around every point, it looks like regular n-dimensional space. Manifolds are foundational in areas such as geometry, calculus, and physics, particularly in understanding complex shapes and spaces. In engineering, especially in automotive applications, a manifold refers to a component that channels fluids or gases, such as an intake or exhaust manifold in an engine. The term can thus refer to both abstract mathematical concepts and tangible mechanical parts, depending on the context.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working with manifolds in industrial settings?

Engineers working with manifolds often encounter challenges such as ensuring leak-tight connections, managing complex piping layouts, and selecting appropriate materials for specific process requirements. Additionally, they must coordinate closely with maintenance and operations teams to minimize downtime during installation or repairs. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential for addressing these challenges and ensuring system reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manifold technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manifold Technician, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of fluid dynamics, and a technical diploma or relevant certification in industrial maintenance or engineering. Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, manifold assembly, and the use of diagnostic tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient assembly and maintenance of manifold systems, which are critical for the reliability of industrial and manufacturing operations.

What is the difference between Manifolds vs Pipefitters?

AspectManifoldsPipefitters
CredentialsRelevant certifications in plumbing and HVACPlumbing and pipefitting certifications, apprenticeships
Work EnvironmentIndustrial, commercial, HVAC systemsConstruction sites, industrial plants, piping systems
Industry UsageUsed in HVAC, plumbing, fluid control systemsUsed in piping installation, maintenance, and repair

Manifolds and pipefitters both work with piping systems, but manifolds focus on assembling and managing fluid distribution through specialized components, often in HVAC or plumbing systems. Pipefitters install and repair piping in various settings, including construction and industrial facilities. While their skills overlap, manifolds are more specialized in fluid control components, whereas pipefitters handle broader piping installation and maintenance tasks.

Founded in 1971 as Selling Precision and rebranded in 2017, the company reflects a strong national presence in the hydraulic industry. Hydraulic Manifolds USA partners with both OEMs and distributors, providing reliable, engineered products for a wide range of applications. The team combines long-standing industry experience with modern manufacturing practices to support quality, performance, and customer satisfaction. Applicants can expect a stable, established workplace with opportunities to work on precision, industry-leading hydraulic solutions.
Role Description This is a full-time, on-site CNC Horizontal Mill Machinist role based in Stow, OH. The CNC Horizontal Mill Machinist will set up, program (as applicable), and operate CNC horizontal milling machines to produce hydraulic manifolds to print specifications and production schedules. Day-to-day responsibilities include reading and interpreting blueprints and work instructions, selecting tooling and fixtures, loading materials, running production parts, and monitoring machines throughout each cycle. The role includes performing in-process inspections, verifying dimensions and tolerances with precision measuring tools, and making necessary offsets or adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency. The machinist will also perform basic machine maintenance, maintain a clean and safe work area, collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve issues, and document work in accordance with shop and quality procedures.
Qualifications

  • Proficient in Machine Operation and Machinery, including setup and safe operation of CNC horizontal mills.
  • Solid Machining and Milling skills, with the ability to read blueprints, follow work instructions, and hold tight tolerances.
  • Experience with Quality Control practices, including use of calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Previous experience as a CNC machinist in a production or job shop environment, preferably in hydraulics or precision manufacturing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues, adjust offsets, and optimize feeds and speeds as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and adherence to safety procedures and shop policies.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift materials as required, and work in a manufacturing environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in machining or related field is a plus.
