Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager, you need strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools, performance tracking systems, and sometimes certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are valuable. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence help managers motivate teams and handle workplace challenges effectively. These skills and qualities are essential for driving results, maintaining team morale, and meeting organizational goals.

What is the difference between Manager vs Supervisor?

AspectManagerSupervisor
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree often preferred; management experienceHigh school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentStrategic planning, team leadership, decision-makingOverseeing daily operations, direct staff supervision
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for leadership rolesCommon in retail, manufacturing, and service sectors
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for leadership roles with strategic responsibilitiesSeeking roles focused on daily team oversight

The main difference between a Manager and a Supervisor lies in their scope of responsibilities. Managers typically handle strategic planning, decision-making, and team leadership at a higher level, often requiring a degree and management experience. Supervisors focus on overseeing daily operations and directly supervising staff, often with less formal education. Both roles are essential in organizational hierarchy, but Managers generally have broader responsibilities and influence within a company.

What does a manager do?

Managers supervise a team of people; they establish goals, assign tasks, and measure progress. The specific responsibilities of someone in a management position will vary based on the company and industry they work in, but their primary responsibilities remain largely the same. Managers monitor the accomplishments of their staff, focusing on the overall goals of the department. They work with Human Resources to determine and address staffing needs, coordinate and delegate responsibilities, check employee performance, and provide additional training and direction when necessary.

What is a manager?

Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams, projects, or departments within an organization. Their main duties include planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources to achieve specific goals. Managers also play a key role in motivating employees, setting objectives, and ensuring effective communication between staff and upper management. They often make decisions about hiring, training, and evaluating team members to ensure organizational success.

What are common challenges managers face when leading diverse teams, and how can they address them?

Managers often encounter challenges such as communication barriers, varying work styles, and potential conflicts when leading diverse teams. To address these, it's important to foster an inclusive environment, provide clear expectations, and encourage open dialogue. Successful managers also invest time in understanding individual strengths and cultural backgrounds, which helps build trust and collaboration. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions can further enhance cohesion and productivity.

General Manager

Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin | Austin, TX

About us

Peachtree Group is seeking an experienced, strategic, and highly engaged General Manager to lead Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin into its next chapter.

Located in the heart of downtown Austin, Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin is a 246-room, full-service lifestyle hotel designed to place guests at the center of the city’s energy, culture, and entertainment. The hotel is steps from the Texas State Capitol, adjacent to the historic Paramount Theatre, and near major demand drivers such as the Moody Center, South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and the Austin Convention Center.

This is a unique opportunity for a hospitality leader who understands how to operate a sophisticated, full-service lifestyle hotel while building meaningful connections with guests, associates, ownership, Hyatt, and the Austin community. The ideal candidate will bring strong financial and commercial discipline, a passion for food and beverage, and the ability to create an energetic culture that reflects both the Hyatt Centric brand and the distinctive personality of Austin.

Job Overview

The General Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and strategic direction of the hotel. This individual will oversee all aspects of the operation, including guest experience, associate engagement, financial performance, sales and revenue strategy, food and beverage, property maintenance, brand compliance, and community positioning.

As the hotel’s senior leader, the General Manager will maintain a visible presence throughout the property, build a high-performing leadership team, and create accountability around operational excellence and financial results. The General Manager will also serve as the primary liaison among Peachtree Group, ownership, Hyatt, hotel leadership, associates, and key community partners.

Leadership

  • Provide strategic and hands-on leadership during the hotel’s transition into Peachtree Group’s portfolio.
  • Establish clear priorities, expectations, and communication throughout the property.
  • Evaluate current operations, talent, service delivery, and financial performance to identify opportunities for immediate and long-term improvement.
  • Build trust and engagement with existing associates while creating excitement around the hotel’s future.
  • Partner closely with Peachtree Group’s regional and corporate teams to execute transition initiatives and establish a strong operational foundation.
  • Develop and execute an annual business plan that supports the hotel’s positioning, market opportunity, and ownership objectives.

Guest Service

  • Champion a guest-first culture that reflects Hyatt Centric’s lifestyle positioning and Peachtree Group’s commitment to exceptional hospitality.
  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the hotel, actively engaging with guests and associates.
  • Monitor guest feedback, service scores, online reviews, and brand metrics, taking timely action to address concerns and improve performance.
  • Empower associates to personalize the guest experience and serve as knowledgeable guides to downtown Austin.
  • Ensure the hotel consistently meets or exceeds Hyatt brand standards, quality expectations, and service requirements.

Financials

  • Take full ownership of the hotel’s financial performance, including revenue, profitability, cash flow, forecasting, budgeting, and expense management.
  • Review financial statements, operating reports, forecasts, labor productivity, and departmental performance to identify trends and opportunities.
  • Hold department leaders accountable for revenue generation, cost control, labor management, and achievement of budgeted results.
  • Balance operational efficiency with the service, product quality, and associate resources required to support the hotel’s positioning.
  • Partner with Peachtree Group and ownership to develop operational strategies, and performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain strong financial controls and ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and audit requirements.
  • Recruit, retain, coach, and develop a talented hotel leadership team.
  • Create a culture of accountability, collaboration, recognition, inclusion, and professional growth.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide consistent feedback, coaching, and follow-through.
  • Maintain high associate engagement while ensuring staffing levels align with business demand and operational needs.
  • Promote internal development, succession planning, and cross-training across departments.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.

Sales and Revenue

  • Work closely with sales, marketing, and revenue management teams to develop strategies that increase occupancy, average daily rate, market share, and total hotel revenue.
  • Understand Austin’s business, leisure, entertainment, government, group, and special-event demand generators.
  • Identify opportunities to capitalize on major citywide events, including festivals, conventions, concerts, sporting events, and government-related travel.
  • Maintain relationships with key accounts, local organizations, community leaders, tourism partners, and neighborhood businesses.
  • Actively participate in sales calls, property tours, client events, and community initiatives.

Food & Beverage and Social

  • Provide strategic oversight of the hotel’s restaurant, rooftop bar, catering, and event operations.
  • Partner with food and beverage leadership to strengthen the identity, profitability, service, and local relevance of The Tradition and Heydey Social Club.
  • Develop programming and partnerships that attract both hotel guests and Austin residents.
  • Ensure food and beverage concepts deliver consistent quality, memorable experiences, and strong financial performance.
  • Monitor food cost, beverage cost, labor, purchasing, inventory controls, and outlet profitability.
  • Support creative activations, entertainment, seasonal offerings, and community events that reinforce the hotel’s lifestyle positioning.

Brand Compliance

  • Ensure the property is maintained at a high level of cleanliness, safety, presentation, and operational readiness.
  • Maintain compliance with Hyatt standards, Peachtree Group policies, franchise requirements, licenses, permits, and applicable regulations.
  • Protect the hotel’s assets, reputation, guests, and associates through strong risk-management and emergency-preparedness practices.
  • Ensure all operational and financial documentation is accurate, timely, and complete.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive hotel leadership experience within major brands (Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc.)..
  • Previous General Manager experience at an upscale, full-service, boutique, or lifestyle hotel strongly preferred.
  • Hyatt brand experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing rooms, food and beverage, sales, revenue management, finance, engineering, and human resources.
  • Proven success managing hotel budgets, forecasts, financial statements, labor, and overall profitability.
  • Experience leading a hotel through a management transition, ownership change, repositioning, or performance-improvement period is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of lifestyle-hotel operations and destination-driven guest experiences.
  • Proficiency with hotel property-management, revenue-management, financial-reporting, and guest-experience systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and high-demand citywide events.
