Job description

Responsibilities

Position Overview

 

We are seeking a highly skilled and mission-focused Senior VMware Engineer to support a federal government customer within the Intelligence Community (IC). The ideal candidate will serve as a technical lead responsible for the architecture, deployment, administration, optimization, and sustainment of highly secure VMware virtualized environments operating within classified infrastructures and SCIF environments.

This role requires deep expertise in VMware vSphere, enterprise virtualization, infrastructure engineering, cluster design, and performance optimization across Dell and Nutanix platforms. The candidate must possess strong troubleshooting capabilities, excellent communication skills, and experience supporting mission-critical production systems in secure environments.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead and manage administrative, engineering, and design activities for enterprise virtualized server infrastructure supporting classified mission environments.
  • Architect, deploy, and maintain VMware vSphere 8.x environments, including the design and implementation of new ESXi clusters from the ground up.
  • Design, deploy, and support multiple VMware vSphere production clusters within classified and SCIF-accessible environments.
  • Maintain and support VMware infrastructure operating on Dell and Nutanix hardware platforms.
  • Perform VMware infrastructure monitoring, health analysis, and performance optimization across enterprise environments.
  • Conduct infrastructure capacity planning, resource allocation analysis, and ESXi cluster load balancing activities.
  • Configure and manage VMware vCenter, ESXi hosts, distributed virtual switches (VDS), storage integration, and high availability configurations.
  • Implement and maintain VMware features including HA, DRS, vMotion, Storage vMotion, and lifecycle management.
  • Support secure virtualization architectures compliant with federal and IC cybersecurity requirements.
  • Troubleshoot complex virtualization, compute, storage, and networking issues within classified production environments.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, cybersecurity personnel, network engineers, and government stakeholders to support operational requirements and modernization initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and engineering implementation plans.
  • Support maintenance windows, upgrades, patching activities, and infrastructure lifecycle initiatives.
  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and operational support activities for mission-critical systems.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

 

  • Active TS/SCI or Q/SCI clearance required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience) preferred
  • Minimum of 12 years with BS/BA; Minimum of 10 years with MS/MA; Minimum of 7 years with Ph.D., 16 years with a HS Diploma
  • 8+ years of experience supporting enterprise VMware environments.
  • 5+ years of experience engineering and administering VMware vSphere in classified or federal government environments.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and managing VMware vSphere 8.x environments.
  • Strong experience with:
    • VMware ESXi
    • VMware vCenter
    • VMware HA/DRS
    • VMware Lifecycle Manager
    • VMware Distributed Switches
    • vMotion and Storage vMotion
  • Experience supporting Dell and Nutanix infrastructure platforms.
  • Strong understanding of virtualization performance tuning, resource optimization, and capacity planning.
  • Experience with SAN/NAS storage technologies and enterprise networking concepts.
  • Familiarity with STIG compliance, RMF processes, and federal cybersecurity standards.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills in complex enterprise environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) certification.
  • Experience with Nutanix AHV or hybrid virtualization environments.
  • Experience with automation and scripting technologies such as PowerShell, PowerCLI, Python, or Ansible.
  • Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery solutions supporting VMware environments.
  • Experience supporting air-gapped or highly restricted classified systems.
  • Knowledge of enterprise monitoring and logging platforms.

Target Salary Range$135,000 - $216,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations.
