Job Description Summary:

The Production Operator will be responsible for overseeing and managing production by operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting production units and equipment to ensure personal safety, process safety, plant reliability and product quality. The production units consist of typical refining operations including tank farm, marine loading docks, and truck rack operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Gain the knowledge and skills to effectively operate production units
  • Monitor and accurately record temperatures, pressures, and flow rates
  • Diagnose and resolve unit upsets and equipment malfunctions
  • Analyze and interpret plant process diagrams
  • Ensure proper shift turnover by providing effective written and oral communications to the relieving shift
  • Communicate with engineers, maintenance technicians, and other team members to assist in identifying maintenance issues and planning and scheduling maintenance activities
  • Perform preventive maintenance
  • Oversee permitting of unit maintenance activities
  • Tank gauging, truck loading/off-loading, and marine dock management, including working on and around marine vessels and boats within a water environment
  • Ensure compliance with and carrying out all production, maintenance, health, safety, security, and environmental policies and procedures
  • Participate in emergency training and respond to emergency situations including support or being part of the site Emergency Response Team
  • Climb ladders, climb stairs, enter confined spaces, lift 50 lbs., and work outside in inclement weather without accommodation
  • Ability to take immediate corrective action in the event a potential unsafe act or behavior is observed
  • Use computers and other electronic devices to carryout work activities
  • Work at heights including from scaffolding and grating
  • Work in a loud industrial environment
  • Work 12-hour shift work including rotating day and night shifts, holidays and weekends
  • Respond to unscheduled callouts
  • Complete required health, safety, security, and environmental compliance training
  • Use proper personal protective equipment

Experience & Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States permanently on a full-time basis without requiring sponsorship.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and write English fluently.
  • Hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card - Information may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.
  • Adhere to site alcohol and drug standards including random drug screenings
  • As part of the pre-employment selection process, candidates are required to submit to and receive satisfactory results from all pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug screening (including a hair sample), medical evaluation, and reference checks.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt – eligible for overtime

Work Schedule: 12-hour rotating shifts, nights and days

About the Site: The Vertex Refining Alabama Site is a 24/7 manufacturing plant in Saraland, Alabama that specializes in the production and distribution of refined products and base oil for the lubricants market. It employs approximately 180 full-time staff, including both hourly and salaried employees. The site is known for its strong operational performance and community presence. The United Steelworkers Union (USW) represents the hourly workforce.
