This internship focuses on the documentation and coverage of Appalshop's programmatic work, Appalshop's public events, and potentially other community events, as needed. Interns will assist the Communications Manager in checking in with Appalshop programmatic departments to gauge current work and upcoming events and then plan and execute content creation about such topics. Content will be multimedia and used for several platforms and contexts, including but not limited to: written work for newsletters and captions, video productions for Reels/TikToks/YouTube, audio productions for our radio station WMMT and Soundcloud/YouTube, and photography and graphics for social media posts.


Organization Description: Appalshop is an arts and culture center located in Whitesburg, KY. Since 1969, they have been producing films, plays, and radio about the Central Appalachian Region. Appalshop houses the world's largest collection of Appalachian materials in their Archive. Appalshop began in 1969 as part of the War on Poverty during Lyden B. Johnson's presidency. The goal was to train low-income youth in media. The expectation was that they would move away and use these skills to find work. Instead, they stayed and made Appalshop what it is today.


Internship Duties, Responsibilities, and Career Competencies:

  • Conduct regular check-ins with Appalshop program staff to identify stories, milestones, and upcoming events. (CSD, C, CT, TW, T)
  • Develop and maintain a content calendar in coordination with the Communications Manager. (C, P, TW)
  • Capture and produce multimedia content (video, audio, photography, written features) highlighting Appalshop programs and community impact. (CSD, T, L, P, T)
  • Assist in drafting and editing newsletters, press materials, website updates, and social media copy. (CSD, C, CT, P, T)
  • Record short-form video content for platforms such as Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube. (CSD, C, CT, P, T)
  • Support audio production for WMMT and related digital platforms, including interviews and event coverage. (CSD, C, CTR, TW, P, T)
  • Organize and archive digital assets (photos, video, audio files) following internal file management standards. (P, TW)
  • Attend and document public programs, screenings, workshops, and community events as needed. (CSD, C, CTR, L, P, TW)

Qualifications:

  • A current UPIKE student with interest/major/minor in Film & Media Arts, Communications, English, or relevant field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in community media, and/or Appalachian arts and culture.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and short-form content creation.
  • Basic experience with video, audio, or photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CapCut, etc.).
  • Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage projects independently.
  • Comfortable conducting interviews and engaging with diverse community members.


Skills Developed:

  • Multimedia storytelling across video, audio, photography, and written platforms.
  • Content strategy and planning, including calendar development and cross-platform coordination.
  • Interviewing and community-centered reporting techniques.

Work Schedule:

Format: Hybrid or fully virtual. Access to a reliable laptop or desktop with internet access is required.

Supervision: Weekly meetings (approx. 1hr) with the Communication Manager (in person or vitual).

Terms: Upon hire, the intern must register for the Summer II Internship course. To receive course credit, students will complete assignments concurrently with internship work. Students are required to work a total minimum of 80 hours and will eligible for the following credit hours: 80-119 hours of work + course completion = 2 credit hours; 120-159 hours of work + course completion = 3 credit hours; 160-199 hours of work + course completion = 4 credit hours; 200-239 hours of work + course completion = 5 credit hours; 240+ hours of work = 6 credit hours. Summer interns in this position cannot exceed 40 hours of work per week.
