Job description

What You'll Do
As a Manager on our Sales & Use Tax team, you'll have the opportunity to work directly with a diverse client base on complex multi-state indirect tax matters while serving as a strategic advisor and true business partner. This role offers strong visibility with clients and firm leadership, exposure to a wide variety of consulting and planning projects, and the ability to make a meaningful impact beyond day-to-day compliance work.
At Cohen & Co, our collaborative environment gives Managers the opportunity to mentor and develop team members, build trusted client relationships, and continue growing their own careers in a firm that values accessibility, flexibility, and long-term professional development.
Sales & Use Tax Compliance & Consulting
  • Manage and review Sales & Use Tax returns across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and timely filing.

  • Oversee return data gathering, reconciliations, and workpaper documentation (including tie-outs to GL/sales data where applicable).

  • Support clients in optimizing indirect tax compliance processes and controls to improve accuracy and reduce risk.

  • Advise clients on nexus, taxability (including product/service and SaaS/digital goods considerations, as applicable), exemptions, and audit defense.

  • Assist with responses to state and local notices, information requests, and audit inquiries.

  • Lead voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), nexus studies, exposure reviews, and related remediation planning.

  • Identify and quantify risks and opportunities (e.g., refund opportunities, exemption gaps) and recommend the next practical steps.

  • Serve as a technical resource for indirect tax matters, providing guidance on research, positions, and documentation.

  • Draft and review client deliverables (memos, notices responses, audit support packages, process documentation) with clear, business-focused recommendations.

  • Maintain awareness of legislative and regulatory changes impacting Sales & Use Tax and proactively communicate impacts to clients and internal teams.

  • Support indirect tax technology and data initiatives, including use of Avalara for rate/taxability configuration, returns support, and reporting (as applicable by client).

  • Partner with clients to validate product/service mapping and taxability decisions within Avalara and related systems.

Client Experience
  • Act as primary client contact, delivering proactive, high-quality service and managing expectations across timelines, scope, and deliverables.

  • Build trusted-advisor relationships by understanding client operations, data flows, and indirect tax risk areas.

  • Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients and internal teams, tailoring messages to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Team Leadership & Development
  • Review work of senior and staff accountants; provide coaching, feedback, and technical guidance to drive quality and development.

  • Manage engagement workflows, budgets (where applicable), and deadlines; coordinate resources to ensure on-time, accurate delivery.

  • Contribute to team training, standard workpapers, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Who You Are
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's degree in Taxation/Accounting a plus.

  • CPA and/or JD preferred, but not required.

  • 5+ years of progressive Sales & Use Tax (indirect tax) experience, including managing or leading engagements (public accounting, industry, or combination).

  • Strong multi-state technical knowledge (nexus, taxability, exemptions, audit defense, VDAs) with the ability to apply concepts to real client facts.

  • Experience with indirect tax technology/tools preferred, including Avalara (e.g., mapping/taxability configuration support, reporting, returns support) and strong Excel/data skills.

  • Strong communication, project management, and people leadership skills; comfortable as a primary client contact.
