As a Sales & Use Tax Analyst, you will assist with company exemption certificate management process and the research and analysis of state and local indirect tax laws. Ensure tax calendar for sales and use tax filings, licenses and permits is maintained to reflect current filing requirements. Compile, analyze, and research data for business licenses, sales tax return compliance and audits. Work with business units to ensure timely, complete, and accurate information is obtained and provided to support tax return filings.

**This is a hybrid role in Charlotte NC**

What you'll do:

  • Explain taxability position for variety of issues and all states in a clear and concise manner to branches, credit reps, and external customers

  • Maintain a high standard of customer service when fielding phone calls and emails from internal and external sources regarding taxability, exemption certificates, invoice tax rates and sales tax processes

  • Assist with research regarding product taxability

  • Review, analyze, and summarize data from internal systems, external sources, and available research tools to support taxability
    and compliance determinations.

Exemption certificate management:

  • Review and analysis of certificate validation by third party provider; conduct research and obtain any additional documentation needed, based upon analysis of various state sales tax rules governing exemption certificates

  • Determine good faith acceptance using state statutory standards and company policy

  • Correspond with customers, branches and credit offices by providing clear and concise communication explaining the Sales Tax Department's exemption certificate processes and specific exemption determinations

  • Change and monitor tax flags in ERP system (RentalMan)

  • Electronically store and maintain pertinent documentation and/or exemption certificates, following company procedures and policies

Monitor and retain business operation notifications:

  • Work with third party for the timely preparation, review, and filing of registration or occupation business license applications and renewals

  • Store business licenses electronically and forward copies to the pertinent branch and/or regional office

  • Update compliance calendar to ensure future registration and reporting obligations are met on time

  • Respond to inquiries from branches, business units and jurisdictions in a timely manner

  • Work with acquired companies to ensure that new business operations are in compliance with local licensing rules and regulations

  • Closely work with compliance team to identify jurisdictions where UR may need to register for sales & use tax purposes

Issue and monitor sales tax credit memos:

  • Respond to external customer, branch, and other internal inquiries
    related to credit and debit memos.

  • Review emailed requests for credit memos. Analyze approved
    exemption certificates and cross-reference customer and transaction data to support memo issuance.

  • Oversee regularly scheduled automated credit run to ensure
    requests submitted through the internal request form are captured,
    reviewed, and properly resolved.

  • Help ensure memo issuance is accurate, supportable, and
    consistent with company policy and applicable tax rules.

Assist with monthly sales and use tax compliance process:

  • Assist Sales Tax Senior Analyst and Manager with monthly reconciliation process, internal audit requests, sales tax audit information requests and sales tax return reconciliations

  • Review funding requests from the third-party processor and prepare funding requests for submission to the Treasury Department.

  • Assist the Accounting Department with reconciling payments to the general ledger accounts.

  • Assist the Accounting Department with reconciliation of the transactional tax balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis to ensure automated journal entries for accruals and payments are timely, accurate, and complete.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in accounting, finance or business, or comparable work experience

  • 1-2 years sales tax experience with a multi-state corporation, accounting or law firm preferred

  • Experience with accounting and tax systems (RentalMan/Lawson preferred)

  • Demonstrated Microsoft Office skills, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to review data, identify discrepancies, research issues, and summarize findings.

  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet stated deadlines.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with tax data, customer records, exemption certificates, invoices, and compliance deadlines.

  • Ability to evaluate system-generated results, research outputs, and technology-assisted recommendations for accuracy and completeness.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a team to achieve a common goal.

  • Excellent writing, verbal, and communication skills.

  • Sense of urgency and ability to work independently.

  • Desire to learn new skills and processes, with the ability to adapt to new technologies, workflow
    tools, and evolving department processes.

  • Technical experience with any of the following is a plus: Alteryx, Python, Snowflake, SQL, VBA, or similar reporting, data, or automation tools.

  • Experience in leasing/rental industry helpful
