Job description

The Rink Operator is responsible for ice maintenance and assisting with facility operations including general maintenance and customer service. Primarily responsible for safe operation of the Zamboni and ice maintenance equipment to ensure delivery of a high-quality ice surface for hockey, figure skating, public, and private events. Also responsible for general cleaning and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and rink property, as well as customer service duties as needed for the safe and efficient operation of the skating center.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Drives and operates Zamboni according to established procedures and safety guidelines, including only operating Zamboni when safe and when the ice surface is cleared of all skaters except necessary officials, staff and/or personnel.
  • Evaluates ice conditions, equipment, and facility before, during, and at end of scheduled shift and completes daily checklists as required by management, and reports and concerns, hazards or issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Resurfaces ice and performs edging or other ice maintenance as scheduled to ensure proper ice conditions while adhering to published ice schedule.
  • Performs customer service duties including but not limited to pro shop sales, ticket window sales, skate sharpening, distributing rental skates, and assisting with set up/tear down for internal and external groups/events.
  • Assists with general maintenance and cleaning of facility and rink property including: emptying and relining trash receptacles, sweeping and vacuuming floors and other areas (locker rooms, bench and bleacher areas) as needed.
  • Assists in the general maintenance of the skating center grounds and property, including snow removal from walkways, stairs, doorways, Zamboni bay, and as assigned, as well as operates various cleaning and snow removal equipment/machinery.
  • Assists with game management for Babson College Varsity hockey, Babson Club hockey, youth hockey, adult hockey and other games as needed.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the Zamboni, and other rink equipment.
  • Assists and supports the efforts of rink management.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

  • High School Diploma (some College classes preferred)
  • Previous ice resurfacing experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience operating an ice edger
  • Ability to perform vehicle maintenance
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; take thoughtful risks; and accept new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.
  • Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

  • All Babson College faculty and staff authorized to work on campus must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any appropriate boosters.   • Ability to travel on and off campus
  • Ability to work early mornings, late evenings, and weekends

ADDITIONAL SKILLS YOU MAY HAVE

  • Knowledge of NCAA Hockey protocols and procedures related to college hockey preferred
  • Prior working experience at a college/university rink preferred

This is a non-exempt position with a starting rate of $20.This position includes paid sick leave where required by law. Eligibility, accrual, and usage will follow applicable state and local regulations.
