Job description

Optum Insight is improving the flow of health data and information to create a more connected system. We remove friction and drive alignment between care providers and payers, and ultimately consumers. Our deep expertise in the industry and innovative technology empower us to help organizations reduce costs while improving risk management, quality and revenue growth. Ready to help us deliver results that improve lives? Join us to start Caring. Connecting. Growing together.

The VP, Product Strategy is a key leadership member of the Optum Insight Product & Services team, responsible for setting and driving the Optum Insight product strategy that simplifies outcomes across payers, providers, and consumers within the healthcare system.

This leader will define a clear, cohesive, innovative strategy that aligns Optum Insight's portfolio to the most critical healthcare problems - reducing complexity, improving affordability, enabling better clinical and administrative outcomes, and delivering measurable value at scale. The role partners closely with Product, Technology, Operations, Growth, and Finance leaders to translate strategy into focused roadmaps, investment priorities, and execution plans.

The VP will bring an outside-in, systems-level perspective, ensuring Optum Insight's products work together as an integrated ecosystem rather than a collection of point solutions.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Hybrid in MN/DC : This position follows a hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

Enterprise Product Strategy & Vision

  • Define and own the multi-year product strategy for Optum Insight, grounded in innovating, disrupting and simplifying payer, provider, and consumer/patient experiences and outcomes
  • Establish a clear strategic narrative that connects market needs, customer outcomes, portfolio direction, and enterprise priorities
  • Translate complex healthcare challenges into focused strategic choices, trade-offs, and sequencing decisions

Portfolio Simplification & Value Creation

  • Lead efforts to simplify the product portfolio, reducing fragmentation, overlap, and unnecessary complexity while increasing customer clarity and value
  • Drive alignment across payer, provider, and consumer-facing capabilities to ensure solutions work together to deliver end-to-end outcomes
  • Identify opportunities to standardize platforms, rationalize offerings, and scale repeatable capabilities across markets and customers

Market, Customer & Ecosystem Insight

  • Maintain a deep understanding of healthcare market dynamics, customer needs, regulatory forces, and competitive landscapes
  • Represent the voice of the customer and the system - balancing payer economics, provider workflows, and consumer/patient experiences
  • Partner with Growth and Commercial leaders to ensure strategy is grounded in real customer problems and scalable demand

Strategic Planning & Investment Alignment

  • Partner with Finance, Product, and Technology leaders to align strategy, capital investment, and operating plans
  • Inform prioritization decisions across build, buy, partner, or sunset options based on strategic fit and outcome impact
  • Establish clear criteria for evaluating strategic initiatives, big bets, and long-term innovation investments

Operating Model & Execution Enablement

  • Work closely with Product and Delivery leaders to ensure strategy is translated into actionable roadmaps and execution plans
  • Enable strong governance and decision-making forums that accelerate progress while maintaining strategic discipline
  • Monitor progress against strategic objectives and adjust direction as needed based on results and market signals

Leadership & Influence

  • Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to the Optum Insight executive team
  • Build strong, cross-functional partnerships and influence without direct authority
  • Develop and lead a high-performing strategy organization with a strong bench of talent

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • 15 years of experience in product strategy, management consulting, healthcare technology, or related leadership roles, including experience at the executive level

  • Deep understanding of the U.S. healthcare system, including payer, provider, and consumer dynamics

  • Proven track record of defining and executing enterprise-level product or business strategies at scale

  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complex portfolios and drive clarity, focus, and measurable outcomes

  • Solid executive presence with the ability to influence senior leaders and align diverse stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience operating in a matrixed, highly regulated environment

  • Background in healthcare data, analytics, technology platforms, or services

  • Experience leading through transformation, portfolio shifts, or large-scale change

  • MBA or advanced degree

Leadership Attributes

  • Systems Thinker: Sees connections across the healthcare ecosystem and designs strategies that work end to end

  • Outcome-Oriented: Anchors decisions in customer, financial, and clinical outcomes rather than activity

  • Simplifier: Relentlessly reduces complexity and creates clarity

  • Enterprise Leader: Acts in the best interest of Optum Insight and UnitedHealth Group, not individual silos

  • Change Leader: Comfortable driving transformation while maintaining operational stability
