RF/Electromagnetic Effects Engineer
Dahlgren, VA
General Description:
The RF/Electromagnetic Effects Engineer supports the design, development, integration, and qualification of advanced weapons systems. This role focuses on managing and mitigating electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) across system design, integration, and operational environments. The engineer will lead analysis and test activities related to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electronic warfare (EW) survivability, and Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) to ensure safe and effective operation of RF-enabled weapon systems. The position supports system engineering teams throughout the design, integration, test, and fielding lifecycle.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Radio Frequency (RF) and Electromagnetic Engineering
  • Analyze RF environments affecting weapon system performance and survivability.
  • Develop and implement mitigation strategies for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues.
  • Conduct RF modeling, analysis, and system performance assessments.
  • Support RF subsystem integration including antennas, transmitters, receivers, and RF datalinks.
  • Design, develop, and test prototype systems.
Electromagnetic Effects (E3)
  • Evaluate and manage system compliance with E3 requirements including:
    • EMI/EMC
    • Electromagnetic Vulnerability (EMV)
    • Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)
    • Lightning and bonding/grounding
    • Platform RF interference
    • Support E3 requirements development and verification activities.
    • Develop test plans and support laboratory and field E3 testing
Electronic Warfare (EW)
  • Assess weapon system survivability in contested electromagnetic environments.
  • Analyze susceptibility to jamming, spoofing, and electronic attacks.
  • Support integration with platform EW systems and defensive countermeasures.
  • Perform RF threat analysis and modeling.
HERO (Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance)
  • Conduct HERO analyses for weapon systems and associated subsystems.
  • Support HERO surveys, certification documentation, and platform integration assessments.
  • Evaluate RF exposure risks to ordnance during shipboard, aviation, and ground operations.
  • Develop mitigation strategies and safe operating procedures.
Integration and Test
  • Support system integration and test events, including RF range testing and platform integration.
  • Develop and review test procedures, data analysis reports, and certification documentation.
  • Collaborate with system engineers, platform integrators, and government stakeholders.
  • Support developmental testing, operational test events, and qualification efforts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience Requirements:
College graduate with 5 years of experience. Must demonstrate significant knowledge gained through coursework, project work, internships, and similar.
Working Conditions:
  • Professional office environment, prototyping laboratories, test ranges, and military platforms.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift 20 lbs.
  • Excessive bending and stooping.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Travel will be required (less than 40%).
