What is an RF Integration engineer?

RF Integration engineers are professionals who specialize in integrating radio frequency (RF) components and systems into electronic devices, ensuring they function correctly within a larger system. They work on tasks such as testing, troubleshooting, and optimizing the performance of RF modules in products like smartphones, wireless communication devices, and IoT hardware. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with hardware and software teams to resolve signal interference, improve connectivity, and ensure regulatory compliance. RF Integration engineers play a crucial role in bringing wireless products to market efficiently and reliably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF Integration engineer?

To thrive as an RF Integration Engineer, you need a strong background in radio frequency (RF) engineering principles, signal processing, and wireless communication, often supported by a degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering. Proficiency with tools such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, RF simulation software (like Keysight ADS or Ansys HFSS), and familiarity with industry standards is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and attention to detail are key soft skills that help in collaborating across teams and troubleshooting complex integration issues. These skills ensure reliable integration, optimization, and performance of RF systems critical for telecommunications and wireless infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by RF Integration engineers during multi-vendor system deployments?

RF Integration engineers often encounter challenges related to compatibility and interoperability when integrating equipment from multiple vendors. These issues can include mismatched interfaces, inconsistent software versions, and varying calibration standards, which require thorough testing and troubleshooting. Close collaboration with vendor representatives and internal teams is essential to resolve technical discrepancies and ensure seamless system performance. Additionally, managing tight project timelines and adhering to regulatory compliance adds complexity to the integration process.

What is the difference between Rf Integration vs Rf Design?

AspectRf IntegrationRf Design
Primary FocusAssembling and testing RF components and systems to ensure proper functionalityCreating and developing RF circuit layouts and specifications
Required SkillsTesting, troubleshooting, system integration, knowledge of RF hardwareCircuit design, simulation, schematic development, RF theory
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing facilities, field testingDesign offices, R&D labs, engineering teams
Common CertificationsRF certifications, technical training in RF hardwareElectrical engineering degrees, RF design certifications

Rf Integration involves assembling and testing RF systems to ensure they work correctly, focusing on hardware and system-level troubleshooting. Rf Design centers on creating RF circuits and schematics, emphasizing design and simulation. Both roles require RF knowledge but differ in their primary tasks and work environments, making them distinct yet complementary careers in the RF industry.

Locations: Huntsville, AL ,Alexandria, VA. Telecommuting may be available.
Clearance: Active Secret with the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
This position is contingent upon contract award.
Leidos is seeking an RF Engineer III to design, analyze, and test RF communication links for the Army's Counter-UAS (C-UAS) Network Communication System (NCS). You'll ensure secure, reliable RF connectivity supporting M-LIDS and FS-LIDS systems used in Short-Range Air Defense (SHORAD) missions.
This role spans RF link design, propagation modeling, EW threat mitigation, RF hardware integration, and field testing-working closely with systems, software, and cybersecurity teams in an Agile environment.
Key Duties
  • Perform RF link budget analysis, propagation modeling, and spectrum assessments.
  • Design RF links/waveforms supporting secure, reliable tactical data transmission.
  • Integrate RF hardware (radios, antennas, transceivers) with secure network architecture.
  • Mitigate interference, jamming, and EW threats; design anti-jam/frequency-agile approaches.
  • Optimize RF link latency, throughput, and reliability for remote monitoring/control.
  • Support RF testing, EMI/spectrum compliance, and field/range evaluations.
  • Provide RF input to RMF/ATO security requirements and assessments.
  • Present RF analysis and recommendations at TIMs; maintain RF sections of system documentation.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors in EE/RF/Communications Engineering + 8+ years RF engineering experience.
  • Current Secret clearance with the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance.
  • Experience with RF link analysis, propagation modeling, and spectrum planning.
  • Hands-on RF hardware/system design and integration.
  • Familiarity with EW threats and anti-jam RF design.
  • Experience with RF test tools (spectrum/network analyzers, signal generators).
  • Knowledge of DoD cybersecurity and spectrum management requirements.
  • Strong RF technical writing and ability to brief government stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with C-UAS/SHORAD/LIDS systems.
  • RF integration for fielded tactical systems (M-LIDS/FS-LIDS).
  • Experience with MATLAB/SystemVue or similar RF modeling tools.
  • SDR/waveform development experience.
  • Military/federal spectrum coordination experience.
  • Agile/Scrum engineering experience.
