Job description

Plant Metallurgist

The Plant Metallurgist is responsible for ensuring product quality by overseeing sample testing, cleaning and organizing equipment/work area, and reporting sample test results to Manufacturing. This position also maintains the metallurgical databases and maintains a safe and healthy work environment for the team.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the laboratory activities are carried out in accordance with the Quality Management System, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Develop and maintain the metallurgical process control requirements in accordance with the Quality Control Procedure Manual and the work instructions.
  • Conduct metallurgical investigations and evaluations; implement corrective and preventative actions for customer concerns as required.
  • Participate in the internal correction program.
  • Manage outside heat treat vendor and development in conjunction with the Quality Management System.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Develop new, or enhanced, material and process solutions to meet customers’ or plant needs at the direction of management.
  • Performs lab testing and analysis in support of chosen development projects. Ensures equipment is operational, certified, and utilized safely and effectively.
  • Assists in technical problem solving, process improvement, and new product launch activities as needed to support production.
  • May visit customers along with the sales team as a technical expert to support the selling process or in a problem-solving capacity.

Qualifications

  • BS in Metallurgy/Engineering, Material Science or equivalent in Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5-7 years job experience in Metallurgy Laboratory in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks on multiple projects with multiple people a must.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
