Job description

Tools Inc. Overview

Tools Inc. is an established tool and die, and metal stamping company in Sussex, WI founded in 1954. We partner with our customers providing them with innovative and world-class solutions in single-hit, progressive, transfer and deep draw dies, precision sheet metal stampings, and laser cutting. We pride ourselves on our quality, timeliness and service.

Position Overview

The Tool Designer is responsible for developing advanced deep draw and progressive die designs that support the production of highly cosmetic stamped components. Using SolidWorks and forming simulation tools, this role transforms customer part models into fully engineered tooling solutions that achieve functional, dimensional, and aesthetic requirements. The Tool Designer works closely with tool makers, project managers, and customers to ensure tooling is manufacturable, cost-effective, and aligned with production capabilities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Design deep draw, progressive, and secondary stamping dies, including detailed breakdowns of forming operations, trim steels, punches, and die components.
  • Create accurate 3D models, assemblies, and detail drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Apply forming simulation software to evaluate draw feasibility, thinning, wrinkling, springback, and overall tooling performance.
  • Review customer part prints and specifications, applying GD&T and tolerance requirements.
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability feedback on part geometry, draw feasibility, material flow, and cosmetic requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers, toolmakers, machinists, and customers to resolve design challenges related to materials, process limits, and die function.
  • Evaluate forming risks such as thinning, wrinkling, and springback, and incorporate corrective design features.
  • Update designs based on prototype tryouts, production feedback, and engineering changes.
  • Select and specify standard die components (guide pins, bushings, springs, cams, etc.)
  • Support estimating by creating die concepts, preliminary designs, and BOMs.
  • Maintain revision control, documentation, and accurate digital design records.
  • Perform other engineering and documentation tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Engineering Design, Mechanical Design, Tool Design, Manufacturing Technology, or related field required.
  • Training or experience in CATIA, SolidWorks, or similar design software strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of GD&T.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Effective organization, time management, and prioritization abilities.
  • Skilled in measuring and inspecting dimensional features (lengths, diameters, straightness, flatness, etc.)
  • Ability to create accurate 3D tool and component models.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to work in both an office setting and manufacturing environment, including regular movement between work areas. Employees must be able to stand, walk, and observe tooling operations on the production floor, and occasionally lift or carry items up to 25 pounds. The role requires ability to safely navigate an active tool and die environment in compliance with company safety standards.
