Immediate opening for a full-time Metallurgical Engineer at Hornady Manufacturing to support the design, development, and optimization of metal components and high-volume manufacturing processes. This role is focused on troubleshooting complex metal-forming processes like drawing, extrusion and tooling design to ensure rigorous safety and performance standards.

This position requires a balance of design and hands-on in a high-speed, tight-tolerance manufacturing involvement. Engineers are expected to take ownership of projects from concept through production, working closely with tooling, production, and engineering teams to deliver reliable, efficient solutions. This position reports to the Engineering Manager and works onsite at the various Hornady locations in and around Grand Island, NE.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop metal components and assemblies with emphasis on manufacturability, durability, and cost efficiency
  • Lead development and optimization of metal forming and drawing processes for high-volume production
  • Design and support tooling, including dies, fixtures, and forming tools required for production
  • Own projects from concept, design, tooling development, and production implementation
  • Work directly on the shop floor to validate designs, troubleshoot tooling, and support production needs
  • Collaborate closely with toolroom and production teams to implement and refine tooling solutions
  • Troubleshoot forming issues and implement corrective actions
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts to increase throughput, reduce scrap, and improve product quality
  • Perform tolerance analysis and ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards
  • Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings and documentation
  • Support new product development and transition designs into production
  • Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory requirements

Ideal candidates for this position will possess the following skills, abilities, and education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or experience equivalency.
  • 5+ years of experience in metal forming, stamping or part manufacturing
  • Proven skills in tooling design, including dies and forming tools
  • Strong understanding of material behavior in forming processes
  • Proficiency in interpreting and creating engineering drawings, including GD&T
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex manufacturing problems in a production environment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks part design (or similar CAD software) and technical drawings
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Experience working in high-speed manufacturing environments with tight tolerances
  • Experience with progressive dies and high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Experience with forming simulation or FEA tools
  • Experience with heat treating various alloy metals and understanding of its impact on material properties and performance
  • Hands-on machining or toolroom experience
  • Understanding of ammunition types, reloading equipment, and ballistics performance (preferred)
  • Ability to work in various environments: manufacturing floor, engineering lab, and ballistics shooting range
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, climb or walk for 10 hours (or more) per day

Competitive wages and comprehensive benefits package available. Qualified candidates should apply and submit a cover letter and resume by June 10th at https://www.hornady.com/corporate/employment.
