Description
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The City of Starkville has partnered with Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) to provided structured, supervised, and compensated internship opportunities for eligible Starkville High School Students. This partnership is supported through funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist in a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks in the Municipal Court Department.
  • Assist with courtroom setup prior to hearings (case files, dockets, recording systems)
  • Record court proceedings, dispositions, and judicial orders
  • Maintain accurate documentation of case outcomes
  • Provide support to the judge and court staff during sessions
  • File, scan, and maintain paper and electronic case records
  • Enter case information into the court case management system
  • Prepare and process court documents (summons, warrants, notices, subpoenas)
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of sensitive information
  • Retrieve files and records upon request
  • Assist the public at the service counter and by phone
  • Provide information regarding court procedures, payment options, and court dates (without offering legal advice)
  • Accept payments for fines, fees, and court costs
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
  • Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Familiarity with records management and document filing systems
  • Understanding of confidentiality laws and handling sensitive information
  • Basic accounting principles related to processing fines, fees, and payments
  • General knowledge of office practices and administrative procedures

Skills and Ability to:
  • Perform data entry and recordkeeping accurately.
  • Handle cash and process payments.
  • Prepare documents and manage files.
  • Work four (4) hour shifts for five (5) days per week.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing, and to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Follow Department and City policies and procedures operating with supervision.
  • Learn new technology systems; various zoning, planning and redevelopment procedures; and ordinances, laws, and regulations pertaining to all aspects of urban planning and development very quickly and efficiently.
  • Remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
  • Work as part of a team.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Junior or Senior Starkville High school student in good standing in the Work Based Learning Program.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Direct deposit and clear drug screen.

Qualifications for a Work-Based Learning Internship through Starkville High School:
  • A Junior or Senior Student
  • Ages 16-17

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting light objects. Work requires physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs and body in the operation of a computer and other office machine, equipment, tools, and documents.
