Job description
The Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) is seeking a Director for their Global Health Programs Office to plan and direct the design, implementation, and evaluation of courses and supplemental activities. To direct all course offerings as well as evaluate student performance in Global Health Programs including teaching five elective courses including two on campus courses each semester, two community based elective and clerkship courses in Global Health on an ongoing basis, overseeing medical French and Spanish language instruction programs; develop and oversee new community based learning sites; develop and sustain international and domestic partnerships and special projects related to global health on behalf of the Carver College of Medicine; develop funding for such projects as well as award student scholarships through successful grant submissions and partnership with the UI Center for Advancement.
Primary Duties
Recruit, Admit and Retain Prospective and Current Students
- Plan, direct, oversee, and evaluate the development, design, implementation, and oversight of the CCOM Global Health Programs unit including administrative, budgetary, and operational functions. Analyze program data and develop plans for refinement. Formulate goals and strategic plans.
- Oversee registration, elective development and implementation, and evaluation of performance for Individually Arranged Electives 050:282.
- Advise current and prospective students on program requirements as well as post-graduation plans.
- Direct academic student exchange programs with seven international institutional affiliate institutions. Develop new exchange opportunities. Oversee Memorandums of Agreements with affiliated sites.
- Develop and direct 4 year-long Global Health Distinction Track for medical students including mentorship of individual students on final distinction projects.
- Coordinate educational programs for OSAC Global Programs guests.
- Represent educational programs and the College of Medicine to student and professional groups, symposiums and workshops.
- Oversee fellowship awards for Global Programs participation.
Enrollment Management
Develop, implement, manage course enrollment, and evaluate Global Health Program initiatives including Directorship of courses Global Health Issues MED 8081 and MED 8081, Global Health Seminar MED 8084, Global Health Clerkship MED 8480 and Individually Arranged Global Health Elective MED 8483.
Design brochures, application and course materials, orientation materials, and evaluation forms for successful completion of programs. Write and edit articles and reports for publication and distribution.
Academic Standards and Curricular Policies
- Responsible for the development of educational objectives of Global Programs.
- Participate in the team development of educational objectives integrating the three ambulatory M3 clerkships (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Community Based Primary Care Clerkship).
- Interpret and implement collegiate and university policies and procedures concerning student activities and student organizations.
Academic Program Management (Planning, Designing, Integrating, and Evaluating Curriculum)
- Responsible for the development, design, implementation and maintenance of the CCOM Global Programs.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate new Global Program initiatives including new course development (Global Health Issues 050:282 and Individually Arranged Electives 050:281), sites for student programs, student organizations (Global Medicine Society), Global Programs speakers' series, and Global Programs Advisory Group.
- Direct and manage Global Health Programs special events including but not limited to international speakers, film series, book discussion groups. Advise global health related medical student organizations.
- Direct Medical Spanish and French programs within the College of Medicine including administrative and operational activities.
- Direct administrative and operational aspects of the UICCOM partnerships focusing on patient care, teaching, and research initiatives.
- Develop and oversee domestic and international sites for student electives including teaching opportunities and logistical arrangements.
- Recruit instructional personnel and/or faculty as appropriate including participation in Global Health courses.
- Investigate new methods, systems, and techniques to provide improved instruction relevant to Global Programs. Consult with faculty and staff concerning appropriate methods of instruction, format, exam questions and student evaluation.
Budget Oversight and Management
Direct fellowship and scholarship awards for Global Health Programs participation.
- Review and develop budgets related to the Global Health Program. Lead strategic financial planning. Advocate for funding necessary to meet program goals. Submit grants and prepare budget proposals for programs. Prepare operational and fiscal reports.
- Write grants and prepare budget proposals for programs.
- Monitor program budget and grants fund allocations and expenditures.
- Prepare special and periodic operational and fiscal reports.
Leadership / Supervision
- May interview, select, train and supervise support staff.
- Participate in global health related faculty hiring interviews as requested.
- Serve on various UI committees including UI Global Health Studies Program Executive Committee and UI Human Rights Charter Committee.
- Represent the UICCOM in leadership structures within educational health inequity consortiums including international and domestic organizations.
- Serve as UI liaison to international visitors and institutions on behalf of the College of Medicine.
- Participate in professional staff activities and committees in the Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum.
- Partner with the UI Center for Advancement on stewardship and use of current funds and assist as requested in solicitation of future scholarship/grant support.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Minimum of one year in global health issues and curriculum coordination.
Minimum of one year in successful domestic and global project negotiations.
Minimum of one year of administrative, supervisory, and fiscal experience.
Ability to represent the College locally, regionally, nationally and internationally is necessary.
Desirable Qualifications
Three to five years' experience in global health issues and curriculum coordination.
Three to five years' experience in successful domestic and global project negotiations.
Three to five years' experience of administrative, supervisory, and fiscal responsibilities.
Experience in fundraising and donor relations is highly desirable.
Experience in coordination of cross-level teams located in separate physical locations is highly desirable.
Foreign language proficiency is highly desirable.
