About the Role

A leading foreign policy think tank is hiring a Managing Editor for its online magazine covering how health shapes economies, societies, and everyday lives around the world. In its first five years, the publication has published more than 1,500 articles from nearly 1,400 authors representing 115 countries, attracted 10 million page views, and been nominated for two Webby awards. Its analysis has been cited by outlets including The Atlantic, BBC, New York Times, and Washington Post, as well as by U.S. congressional committees, foreign ministries, and the World Health Organization. The publication leads all of the organization's newsletters in subscriber growth.

The managing editor will be responsible for the magazine's operations and staff, including writing, soliciting, and editing content, coordinating the work of contributors, and promoting the site. This role reports to the Director of the Global Health Program and requires deep knowledge of and passion for global health and international affairs. The position is based in either New York City or Washington, DC, with a current hybrid schedule of at least three days on-site (moving to four days on-site in September 2026).

  • Overseeing the publication's website and the daily work of its staff
  • Managing a small editorial team, including performance management and professional development
  • Overseeing the solicitation of contributors and planning and approving assignments for writers and editors
  • Overseeing the editing and preparation of content for the site and its weekly newsletter, including editing copy
  • Writing on emerging global health issues and conducting interviews with leading policymakers, front-line health workers, and field experts
  • Overseeing administrative functions including freelancer budget and contracts, advertising, and analytics
  • Maintaining and updating procedures for editing, fact verification, deadlines, and style guidelines
  • Overseeing content strategy and posting articles on the organization's content management system
  • Overseeing the use of photography databases and coordinating data visualizations for the site
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • At least eight years of experience in global health, science, or international affairs journalism
  • Experience with digital publishing, social media, and multimedia editing
  • Proven people management experience, including managing performance and supporting professional development
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for global health and international affairs
  • Familiarity with content management systems, HTML, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, and Figma; WordPress experience preferred
  • Prior work with data visualization, particularly Datawrapper, preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects in a deadline-driven environment
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter with proven ability to work with small groups, senior staff, and projects spanning different time zones and cultural contexts
