Job description

Electrical Distribution Engineer

Sr Electrical Distribution Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Sr Electrical Distribution Engineer to support the planning, design, analysis, and optimization of electric transmission and distribution systems for utility clients. The role focuses on ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric power through engineering studies, system modeling, project delivery, and coordination with operations and stakeholders. The ideal candidate has strong electrical engineering fundamentals, hands-on utility experience, and familiarity with distribution and transmission engineering practices and standards.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform transmission and distribution system planning, design, and analysis for new and existing overhead and underground infrastructure.
  • Develop and execute load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, fault current, and arc flash studies using industry-standard software tools.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, technical reports, and construction packages; review contractor and vendor submittals.
  • Coordinate with utilities, operations, permitting, project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure designs meet operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform field assessments, constructability reviews, and support commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of distribution equipment and protection systems.
  • Apply utility engineering standards and best practices to ensure compliance with NESC, NEC, IEEE, OSHA and other applicable regulations.
  • Model and analyze power systems using tools such as ETAP, EasyPower, Synergi and update GIS and one-line diagrams to reflect system changes.
  • Provide technical support for outage planning, reliability improvement projects, and emergency response efforts.
  • Support budgeting, cost estimating, scheduling, and vendor selection during project lifecycle and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor junior engineers and coordinate multi-discipline teams to deliver projects on schedule and within scope.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Masters degree or advanced coursework is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in electric utility transmission and distribution engineering, including hands-on work with overhead and underground systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical power systems, protection and control, fault analysis, load flow and coordination studies.
  • Required skills: Electrical, Transmission, Distribution, Utility.
  • Experience with software tools and modeling platforms such as Synergi, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, and preparing one-line diagrams, plans, and technical specifications is desirable.
  • Familiarity with standards and codes including NESC, NEC, IEEE, and OSHA safety requirements.
  • Strong project management, communication, and stakeholder coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork and site visits; valid drivers license and ability to travel as needed.
  • Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement; ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure within a defined period is desired but not required.
