The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) South Regional Division (SRD) maintains liaisons with directors and division heads of the General Office (GO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials, public service agencies and the general public. This team of engineers and support staff has contributed to enhancements that are present throughout southern New Mexico.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position is the first level of management in the Engineering Series which provides supervision of subordinate engineers in which the primary focus is on resource management and the leadership of staff.
How does it get done?
The SRD Engineer Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of a specific agency project. This function requires having knowledge of Federal regulations and engineering requirements for this program area; coordinating with the Federal oversight agency and other agencies/departments and outside contracted firms; managing subordinates and others' work and preparing progress reports.
Additional responsibilities will include:
* Develop scope and evaluate fee proposals submitted in response to agencies Request for Proposals (RFP's).
* Development independent labor hours for negotiations with Consultants and identification of funding needs for study projects.
* Sign plans and specifications after ensuring they are complete and ready.
* Implement quality assurance and quality control measures during project development.
* Review specifications and project designs to assure that most current specifications are being used.
* Ensure project design work is coordinated with other sections and bureaus in timely manner.
* Provide detailed updates for projects for the Program Management Team Meeting (PMTM).

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), public entities, and vendors.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred education, licensure, and/or experience in the following areas:
* Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering as certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS).
* Performing advanced engineering assignments in transportation design, planning, and coordination with construction activities.
* Managing several projects concurrently and prioritize assignments.
* Utilizing Transportation design software/programs.
* Preparing transportation design scoping reports, designing reports, and/or roadway corridor projects.
* Management and supervision of staff.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Extensive use of personal computer. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required.
